As part of its calender of events to celebrate Dominica’s Independence the Shalom Preschool in Roseau on Monday held an exhibition to highlight everyday living in the past.
Principal of the school, Marlene Watty, said the aim of the exhibition is to give the students an idea of how their forefathers lived and to compare how they (the students) live today.
“We thought the students are not too young to understand how life was lived by their forefathers,” she told Dominica News Online. “And to show how they are living today.”
On display were items that can hardly be seen today. They included coal irons, an old radio, an old briefcase, chamber pots and ancient coffee grinders, among others.
Also on display were some modern day artifacts so student could make the comparison between the old and the new.
Watty said she was able to get some of the old artifacts from family across the island. “I have some family in Vielle Case and I called them and they sent me some of what you seeing here today,” she said. “I got some from my grandmother in Laudat and some from a lady living in Bath Estate.”
During the course of the exhibition some students portrayed hard working children in the days of old.
Watty hopes to hold the event every year because of the enthusiasm of the students. “Yes, we want to make it a yearly event because the students love it and it is a good way to teach them their history,” she said.
The Shalom Preschool has a student population of 47 with an age range of 2 and a half to 4 and a half years old.
