Being an inspiration and role model to other young men like themselves is one of the main pillars of upcoming bouyon ensemble, Signal band.
This is serving as the driving force behind the band’s 2014 Youth to Youth Campaign dubbed, “This Violence, it has to end.”
Band Manager, Jerlani Robinson, said the campaign is being done to raise awareness among the country’s youth of the consequences of violence.
“We are here undertaking this positive drive, talking to the youth about our experiences in life and the challenges and also advising them on the best way to channel their energy,” he said during the band’s visit to the Convent High School on Wednesday.
Robinson, who is also a cricketer, added that young men and the youth are usually seen in a negative light in society therefore the band has decided to take it upon itself to prove that there are still positive young people out there.
“Slowly but surely we are looking to change that perception. We are going to try to make this campaign an annual one especially during the Carnival and Independence time,” he noted.
The band has already taken its campaign to the Goodwill Primary school, Convent Preparatory school and the St Mary’s Primary school.
Lead singer and leader of the band, Sheldon Alfred, added that the band is approaching the campaign whole heartedly.
He encouraged the youth to find something positive within themselves and be the best that they can be.
“Find something within you, whether it is a talent, a gift. Find it, nurture it, grow it, maintain it and give back to the community … always try to spread your talents, always try to help, be a positive influence in your community,” he said.
According to him, a theme song was created for the campaign dubbed “Our Children.”
“The chorus sings: ‘Let’s make more time for our children; it’s we that can save them with love.’ Signal is urging parents, teachers, leaders and most importantly, more youth to make time for the children as we are the ones to lead them on a positive path,” Alfred noted.
The campaign was launched on February 12th, 2014
At the 2013 National Youth Rally, Signal Band was awarded by the Ministry of Education and Human Resource Development for “Music and Community Involvement”.
Alfred added further that through the campaign the band is continuing its involvement in the development of the local community.
