Sineku Primary School seeks answers

Parents and Teachers of the Sineku Primary School will meet on Monday afternoon to discuss a way forward and to seek answers after a meeting with an education official failed to produce results on a series of break-ins and vandalism at the institution.

“We will be having a meeting at 3.30 pm this afternoon,” PTA president, Marrietta Sanford told Dominica News Online on Monday.

Last Tuesday the PTA met in an emergency meeting following the latest case of vandalism at the school and demanded to meet with chief education officer, Melena Fontaine by Thursday.

However, Fontaine was a no show and according to a source, the PTA was told she was “occupied otherwise” and only the education officer for the east was present.

“At the last meeting nothing really took place because the education officer for the district could not really give us an answer as to what we were looking for,” Sanford stated.

She is hoping to have the presence of education minister, Petter Saint Jean, at today’s meeting.

A source close to the matter told DNO that the school needs answers.

“We need answers, we need to know how fast these problems can be rectified,” the source noted.

For years the Sineku Primary School has been plagued by break-ins and vandalism, the latest on May 11.

To add insult to injury the plumbing and electrical are not in good condition and students are forced to drink water from an an old tank has not been cleaned for ten years, according to sources.

In this day and age, all schools should have proper security personnel at all times. This would also be employment for two or three Kalinagoes. Vote this government out Kalinago people, no matter who they send!

    Salybia Parent

I am patiently awaiting the results of the National Assessment to confirm my point that this school is underperforming and that it NEEDS to be merged with the Salybia Primary!

    Simple logic!!!

just like to remind every one that most money that build the clinic in salyiba came from the church of the nazarine not from goverment and that chef and we have proof of that they could have got more money but pass chef and present have no sence

I hope their problem will be resolved soon.
As for the drinking water, I would not drink from that until it is properly cleaned and safe to drink the water. They could bring a small bottle of water from their home. If possible, freeze it overnight and take it to school.
Pertaining to break and enter and vandalism, it is expensive to employ security personnel for the evening. I foresee two would be required.
I have previously stated a camera and alarm system should be installed which will help to catch the perpetrator(s). It could also deter them from their wicked acts.
Who would commit these atrocities and why? It may be someone who has an axe to grind against the school authorities. Would it be someone as a former student or a parent of the student who was suspended or expelled from the school? The polce should conduct a thorough investigation into this. Police do your work.

According to Q 95 talk show the President gets wages to the tune of $1000.00 a day, the Kalinago Council representing close to 4000 people gets a little over $4000.00 a month to take care of wages of the chief, councilors, and Clerk plus utility bills, stationary and and road maintenance.
This is how Dominica’s first people are treated in 2014.

But do these people have a Parl Rep? Skerrit could spend EC$ 27 000 000.00 on a State Evil, but he cannot ensure that the Kalinago’s children go to school in a safe building?
THAT’S WHY CHANGE IS A MUST!

Why are you blaming the PM? Do they not have a representative who should have addressed the issue and yes take it to the PM or the department which is responsible for schools and school repairs?

The P.M and the other ministers should clean the tank for the children to get clean water, they should even stand watch at nights to catch those involved in these vandalisms, if u all don’t get answers don’t send ur children to school. If Miss Fontaine never shows up, don’t send ur children to school for they are learning for the Ministers and the education officer. Labour Power are the ones committing these burglaries

Some times I find we become to reliant upon government for everything. In certain instances, could the PTA not raise funds to pay someone to clean the tank? Or are there no parents who are capable of doing plumbing or electrical work to volunteer their time? PTA’s are formed for a reason, so it would be good to see the parents in action instead of just words. We need to start helping ourselves. On the other hand, I think the parents are justified in wanting answers and repairs before their children return to that derelict school.

Every school should have a maintenance employee even though he/she serves more than one school. This employee should be experienced in these matters of repair. Or someone or a firm should be contracted to perform these repairs.

You forget he hijacked our $10,000.00 U S dollars, ( 27 million E C $) he build houses with it and give to his political, supporters.
He never help us build our clinic but he put a chief in place to give him the private clinic for free.
Doh forget he also hijack the kalinago Barana Aute’ and employs his stoogy.

Sooooo true. And by the way its not Skerrit alone. No political party have demonstrated any vested interest in the betterment of the Kalinago people.

Interestingly, the very same houses and the school that was built in the Territory was funded by a project which was submitted by KALINAGO PEOPLE to President Chavez. When the project was approved, the Skerrit government hijacked the funds and pretended that it was his government doing sooooo much for the Kalinago people.

Therefore the Kalinago people have absolutely nothing to be thankful to the government for. That was the effort of Kalinago people.

    Dear Petter,

Please close this old school and send the children to the Salybia primary.

It makes no sense to spend scarce resources on this theft prone school!

And to compound the problem, the school is UNDERPERFORMING!

    • Kalinago....
      May 19, 2014

If Sineku Primary school is underperforming, what would you say about the Salybia Primary school? Get your facts right!

      • Mrs. A.A.A
        May 19, 2014

I know that quite well that both schools are way below the national level. What needs to be done is transfer the students to the new Salybia primary school and select the competent teachers from both schools to teach their. After all, there already exists a school bus service. Right?
Well for the other teachers, they can work under the NEP.
