Sagicor General Somerset Sports Club of St. Joseph being cognizant of the importance of Information Technology (IT) as a fundamental tool for learning and by extension social and economic development, has organized a Summer School Program in the area of IT for children between the ages 6 -10 years in the community.
According to a press release, the Program which was launched at the Somerset Club House on Monday July 11, 2016 will continue for another three to four weeks.
“It also includes a blend of Kiddies Cricket, along with a number of competent motivational speakers who will address participants on a range of topics including, ICT, Education, Health, Religion and the Dangers of Illegal Drugs and Narcotics among others,” the release states. “The venue for the Program, Somerset club house is equipped with an assortment of games for recreation, while an educational field trip has also been factored into the Program.”
Sessions are held Monday through Friday from 9:30am to 12:30pm for the duration of the Program, with Kiddies cricket being held two days a week and on which days snacks are provided to all participants.
The release stated also that the Program is being executed by two College students who will each receive a stipend in consideration of services rendered. These individuals operate under the supervision of a five-member management team from Somerset.
“It is expected among other things that at the end of the Program, participants would have familiarized themselves with a very basic understanding of the use of computers and or Tablets and the relevance of these devices as important tools for learning,” the release noted.
The release continued, “This vital Program would not have been possible without the assistance and support of our sponsor, Sagico General Insurance, the Parliamentary Representative for the St. Joseph Constituency, who is also the Minister responsible for Information Technology, Hon. Kelver Darroux, JAS Garraway & Co. Ltd, Tobacco Factory, Somerset’s first ever sponsor, and the generosity of some members at home and abroad. Somerset extends profound gratitude to these benevolent benefactors, who assisted the club in embarking on this critical social enhancement and community development initiative.”
The Program which originally targeted 20 children had an enrolment of 24 after the first week, including 15 boys and 9 girls.

THIS IS SO SO ENCOURAGING. What a splendid initiative. I applaud such wonderful programs. I know the Somerset Sports Club has been engaging in such wonderful programs and I hope other Sports Clubs can follow along similar paths
