The first completely private, Roman Catholic school in Dominica held its Official Opening Ceremony in Portsmouth on Friday morning.

The St. John’s Academy, which is wholly owned by the Catholic Church of Dominica, celebrated its opening with a ceremony held at the Catholic Church Hall.

In attendance were various dignitaries including the President of Dominica, his Excellency Eliud Williams, the Bishop of Roseau his Lordship Gabriel Malzaire, the Minister of Education Petter Saint. Jean and parliamentary representative, Ian Douglas.

The school’s principal Dr. Juliana Magloire and the Parliamentary Representative Ian Douglas were among those delivered addresses at the ceremony.

Various performances by the students also formed part of the ceremony.

The St. John’s Academy operates on a shift system with its sister school the St. John’s primary, with classes running from 1:00 pm to 6:00 pm.

Plans are underway to build a modern state-of-the-art school compound so that classes can be held during regular morning hours.

People talking about false doctrine and doctrine, the SDA in Portsmouth teaching their doctrine to all students that attend their school so what is it with the Catholic school that they cannot teach their doctrine in their school? Why those students who are not catholics left SDA and come to St John’s Academy?
Congratulations to St John’s Academy and the catholic Church in Portsmouth, something good is happening there.
Can’t wait to send my child there. RDPS in 2004 was under the same shift system and it was a primary school 1-6pm, it was the same weather.
    CONGRATULATIONS are in other.

is this time correct 1 pm to 6 pm come on DNO you all news starting to lack information and is no longer reliable. smh

ADMIN: The time is correct. The school is operating on a shift system with St. John’s Primary while the facility to house the Academy is being built. Hence the primary school has classes in the morning and the Academy has its classes in the afternoon. What is so incorrect about that?

So, SMA, SMS, Convent High and Wesley high weren’t private?

    • X
      January 14, 2013

they are not completely private because they receive assistance from the government. So they are called “government assisted” schools

    • Hmmm
      January 14, 2013

Not completely. They recieve some assistance from the government to pay some of their teachers. But they are responsible for the upkeep and maintenance of their facilities.

    • me
      January 14, 2013

They are not fully private because the government pays the teachers’ salaries. Unlikethe St John’s Academy which receives no government assistance.

SUPERB!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Now ensure that the curricullum is not poluted with atheistic nonesense. The entire system should promote that a Loving God created this universe in order to have a loving Fatherly/children relationship with us. Our self-centeredness poluted that relationship to the extent that His loving Son had to be sacrificed in order to restore that relationship. Those of us us who believe and trust Him will begin a relationship right here, right now for all eternity. The job of our education is to enlighten us of this Foundational Fact and everything else that is true in this universe He has created. In so saying I congratulate the people of the St. John’s parish, the Catholic Church and thank my heavenly Father for planting this seed and ask that His custodians nurture it and keep it safe. Amen

MY SENTIMENTS EXACTLY, ANYWAY, ONCE THEY CAN BE ACCOMODATED—NO PROBS—WE LEAD, THEY FOLLOW.

  17. January 12, 2013

Well that is good news to me. Except that my wish is that the Gospel of Jesus Christ will be passed on to the students of that School; so that they will graduate with the “DEGREE”, posted on their hearts and in their minds, of Knowledge of God and His Ways of Love—which the Life in their awakened soul.

Jesus said about His disciples: “This is Eternal Life, that they know You—the One True God—and Jesus Christ whom You have sent”. John 17: 3 Jesus’ is saying that as Christians we are called to be His disciples, for on our hearts and in our minds His Gospel has been written by the Power of Holy Spirit.

Otherwise nothing else matters, if our practice is not striving for the Salvation of Jesus Christ.

For among the other things of this world, which are the attitude and conducts of sinfulness, wickedness, evil, corruption and more, religion, which are definitely the doctrines of men of “the world” is passing away. The complete details are at 1st. Corinthians 7: 29-31.

Religion is the reason God said through His prophet Isaiah: “These people honor Me with their lips but their heart is far from Me; and in vain they worship Me speaking as doctrines, the commandments of men. Read this at the Book of Isaiah, chapter 29, verse 13

Jesus repeated that Scripture of Isaiah, when He said to those who pretended to believe and accept His claims–but He knew that their hearts were not sincere: “Well did Isaiah prophecy of you “hypocrites” as it is written” The repetition Mark 7: 6-7

In these days and times those who continue with an insincere heart, while they bellow out Lord, Lord, Lord, they are only simply fooling themselves—God knows their hearts, for who can hide from Him?

And so, dear Heavenly Father, I send to You from my thoughts, the petition, asking for Your mercy and compassion towards the children, youth, and all those who are ignorant of Your Love, Life in their soul–not by choice–but by the misleading of the doctrines of men in our Dominica.

Hear O Lord the voice of others who call upon You Name through sincere faith, and please set us free, from this prison of false teachings; that further build the confusions of our mind. In the name of Jesus Christ, Amen!

Rastar-Marn curious to see what the curriculum for these poor souls is about yeh,,,

Dem youths doh need another institution to teach dem how to become Economic-slaves to an Imperial, De facto superficial, Temporal system that does nothing more than teach dem how to be dependent on some extrinsic valuable thing [Currency] that which they have no control over no matter how much the system teaches about its attainability,,,

Dem youths should be taught self sustaining courses, how to establish and sustain a lifestyle of self sustenance, civic and Social Studies to secure abundant living and care for their fellow man,,,

Studies to enable them to justify and question the motives those tyrannical rulers, whom have Hijacked this Realm’s governance through Grand Larceny, Extortion, Racketeering [a system of organized crime traditionally involving the extortion of money by intimidation, violence or other illegal methods], Mischief, Theft, De Son Tort [having no right to meddle with the affairs or estate of a decedent, yet undertakes to do so, by color of authority] for their domination [Globalization] over the masses,,,

The concept(s) of the current Educational system have been a failed concept from its inception as now we know that many have lived rather abundant lives withūtan the concept(s) of institutionalization of learning(s),,,

The need for this Academy in the Roman Catholic doctrine is necessary, I know will instil dicipline and dedication in our youngsters today.
Portsmouth will be example to follow and may this Academy go from strength to strength. The Pricipal is very suited for that purpose. Good Luck and in God’s graces as well.

  25. January 12, 2013

ahat’s all good and well but i’m concern about the class hours as we all know 6;oopm is already dark so why so late we talk about children that a all around the place after school is over wasnt that of concern when deciding the hours we want our children to be safe.
Otherwise that’s good news for Portsmouth and the people.

    • me
      January 14, 2013

READ. the hours are temporary hours. Eight years ago when the Roosevelt PRimary School was uninhabitable as a result of the earthquake, the students of that school, and the St John’s primary school as well, also operated on a shift system. This is nothing new.

      January 14, 2013

You can call the school for further information. Their number is listed; sorry don’t have it right now or I would have given it to you.

SInce it is a new school they only have first to 3rd form.

Therefore from September they will have a 4th form and next year, a 5th form.

It is a high/secondary school and follows the same curriculum as other high schools in Dominica. However, their students will also be allowed to do their SAT’s in 5th form as well.
