The students, teachers, parents and principal of the Coulibistrie Primary School hiked part of the National Trail 11 on Friday, 25th March, 2011 from Syndicate to Picard.
They were accompanied by Research Technician, Mr. Kidron Alexander; certified tour guide, Ms. Kashma Julien; village council chairperson, Ms. Marilyn Pascal; visiting friends from the US, Dr. Jill Hearne and her husband, Ron; and other community members.
The principal, Mrs. Joycelyn Alexis-Joseph described the hike as educational, breath-taking and simply beautiful. The approximately 10 -mile trek took just over three hours and there were just two challenging slopes on the descent of Morne Diablotin. The hike ended at the ‘Ras Castle’ River at Picard where the school family had lunch. It was an enjoyable time.
Mr. Kidron Alexander encourages other schools to be part of this venture and to experience the adventures of hiking the Waitukubuli National Trails. He advises educators to use the trails as both an educational and recreational tool.
proud of u guys.u guys just gave me an idea for my organization.thanks for the inspiration.
the trail need to be maintain by people like we
Dominicans of all walks of life, adults, youth, are getting to appreciate the importance of the Waitikubuli National Trail. The Trail is an open natural laboratory offering serious educational insights as far as the sciences are concerned. Pupils and Students as well as adults could learn so much re. the study of the plant and animal kingdom as they enjoy their hikes. It is those kinds of forward thinking, positive ideas and strategies that we need for our National Development. Dominicans should commend highly Bernard Wiltshire, WEF and his colleagues for having thought of such a wonderful feasible project. They also raised millions initially to set the project in motion. All Dominicans will certainly benefit from that venture.
However, what some Dominicans love to do is to demonise those people like Bernard who has and continues to articulate good plans and ideas for our development. Dominica’s natural beauty and resources, if properly managed, could earn millions of dollars by the implementation of such projects. We must conserve, protect our environment and devise ways to generate much needed dollars in addition to the social/cultural benefits. Instead those in authority prefer to beg and depend on foreign countries almost totally for our survival.
Kudos!!Kudos!! to the kids they were very excited & enjoy being in “nature at its best Dominica.” its a learn experience for me as well. To the parents and family members who came thanks for the support. I felt delighted being with the students of my pass school.

Here is an idea to encourage more schools to participae in the hikes.
They should partner with several schools and have a relay of sorts, whereby another school “picks up the baton” and continue the treck. They could do that with 10/12 scools until the entire trail is completed.
Great job guys. If I was there, I would definittely have asked to join and assist in whatever way possible.
great idea
i had a lot of fun with the students. it was an educational and fun event. everybody should experience the waitukubuli national trail. this is going to be the flagship product of our tourism industry.
LET’S HIKE THE NATURE ISLE

I applaud this initiative. Make our children aware of our environment and enjoy the natural treasures we have. We should have more of these hikes – far better then sitting glued to the T.V.
Great idea! More schools should follow suit as too many young children are considered overweight and obese these days.
Ohhhhh belle mashay!!! These were always fun. I remember the ones organized by PSS back in the day. Kudos to the students of Coulibistrie Primary and all others who were a part of this.
