Students from Orion Academy will go head to head with their counterparts from the Portsmouth Secondary School in the final of the 21st Annual Kiwanis Club of Roseau Secondary Schools Debate.
The debate will explore the issue of social networks and is expected to take place on Wednesday, March 27.
Secretary of the club, Kimone Joseph, said the students will be debating the topic “Social networking sites cause more harm than good.”
The team of students of Orion Academy will propose the topic while the team from Portsmouth Secondary School will oppose.
“The Secondary Schools Debate Competition is organized to allow students the opportunity to develop skills in research, public speaking and team work,” Joseph told DNO in an interview. “It also enables them to meet other young people from different parts of the island that they would have never met if it wasn’t for this competition and to participate in healthy competition.”
The debate, which is expected to begin at 10:00 am, is being moderated by Felix Wilson.
Joseph added the topic is relevant because of the immense popularity of social networking sites. “this topic is very relevant right now because we realised that social networking sites are so popular … everybody is on Facebook, everybody is on Twitter … so we thought it would be very interesting to hear what the young people, who are the trendsetters in that regard, have to say about social networking sites and what they contribute whether it’s harm or benefits to society,” she said.
The Kiwanis Club of Roseau is a service based organisation that is made up of professionals willing to give up their time and talents for the development of society. Working with the youth is a main priority for members of the club.
more info should b given ok ok
WAW… Kiwanis, you are doing a good job!!! Keep up teh good work! The best place to start to build a nation is with the youth!
Will DNO carry it live? I am away from home and would like to share in this.
Sounds great good luck to the young people. Wish I could attend.
A week ago,I gave DNO the thumbs up for good reporting,I hope DNO’S report of the proposed debate is true.I say this because, sometime ago the hierarchy of the Skerrit Labor Party, in the persons of Parry and AA told Dominicans that we were not ready for debates.Maybe they meant, Skerrit does not have the political fortitude to take on Mr.Edison James in a public bebate. I wish to recommend that Skerrit be invited to the debate, maybe he might learn something.
Continue on your WINNING streak PSS. Forward ON Forward ON
Good job so far TEAM Whoop whoop
where is it?
I hope you all guys do your research extensively since that’s a great topic to debate and not only debate but to be looked at closely.
I noticed that it is widely used in Dominica, more so world over, with lots of people not realizing the dangers of it.
I know when it was created,it was meant for good but at present and as time goes on,more evil will emerge from it.
The system in its’ self is good but it takes people to work the system, and that’s where the problem is.People are waxing more and more wicked and so what is put into the system is what its’ letting out.
