Tete Morne Primary School fosters environmental awareness among students

The Tete Morne Primary School is conducting a week of activities to foster environmental awareness among its students as well as the general public. The school has named this week, May 30th to June 3rd , Environment Week.

Activities are planned for each day, and involve students and teachers.

On Monday, the week was launched by Principal and staff and the students of Grade Six took part in a school clean-up. They did some weeding of the flower garden and the yard and beautified their surroundings.

On Tuesday, and Wednesday, students and staff focused on ways they could reduce litter, and improve their community.

On Thursday, they will receive a visit by the District Environmental Health Officer, Mr Craig Lebruin. He will make presentations to the students and involve them in discussions about problems that are to be found in their villages as well as outline the solutions to these problems. Topics to be discussed include rodent infestation, mosquito breeding, liquid waste disposal, hygiene and sanitation.

Also on Thursday, the students and staff will take place in a big Community Clean-Up project. This has been held once before by the school and generated much interest and support. Students will wear protective gear including gloves and closed-toe shoes.

On Friday, they will be visited by the Manager of Dominica Solid Waste Corporation (DSWC), Mr Jeno Jacob. Mr Jacob will speak to the school body on matters relating to his company including the problem of littering as well as the effects of proper and improper waste disposal on the environment.

It is planned that the students of the lower Grades, including K,1, and 2 will do a walk-through along the village roads and collect garbage in plastic bags.
Grades 3 and 4 will do a Beach Clean- Up along the bay area in Grand Bay.

Students of Grades 5 & 6 will do a River Clean – Up, walking along the river.

On Friday, students of Grade 6 accompanied by their teacher, will do Yard Clean -Up for villagers, and they will ask for donations from householders in support of school activities.

The school gratefully acknowledges the donations made to assist their project by J. E. Nassief & Co Ltd, HHV Whitchurch & Co Ltd, and J. Astaphan & Co Ltd. Additionally the DSWC has also pledged to provide for garbage collection at the end of the activity.

The school is confident that this week of activities is a way to improve consciousness of our individual responsibility, as well as helping all to take pride in our environment.

This sounds like an awesome way of getting our children involved in the care of the community. I believe that this positive move will give the children a chance to see how and why it is important to care for the place in which they live. Moreover, once it is completed the lesson learned will hopeful stay with them. GREAT PROJECT!!!

WHAT A GREAT IDEA BY THE SCHOOL PRINCIPAL AND STAFF TO HAVE THE SCHOOL KIDS INVOLVE IN A DRIVE TO CLEAN THE COMMUNITY. THAT’S WAY BEYOND THE CLEANING EXERCISES I HAD IN THE 70s WITH THE BOY SCOUTS AND GIRL GUIDES. PRINCIPAL ‘SASE’, YOU ARE REALLY RETIRING WITH A BANG. CONGRATULATIONS TO ALL!!!!

Congratulations Staff and Students of Tete Morne School. I am so proud of you. As a former teacher it gives me great joy to see Tete Morne School in the news for such a noteworthy endeavor. It is good to teach the students love for the environment and country at an early age, our parents would be proud. By the way, I am glad you went by Picodeau since you did some clean up by the river.

This is a bold initiative by the school. I believe that in order to make a change in Tete Morne the young ones must get involved from a very tender age. Good luck guys I just wish i was there to help out.
