Three Dominicans who reside in Anguilla, were among seven teachers recognized for their outstanding service to education on that island.

Ayisha Olivaccé from Grand Bay and Estelle Carter from Castle Bruce received Teachers of the Year Awards, while Londrina Hughes, from Roseau, received the Early Movers Award.

The awards were presented during the first Biennial Teacher of the Year Award on November 9.

“It is the first time in the history of education in Anguilla that an event to honour and award seven persons as Teachers of the Year has taken place,” the Anguillan Newspaper quoted education officer, Charles Connor, as saying. “In Anguilla, the trend or tendency, for the most part, is that we only hear what’s wrong or not good about the education system generally – and teachers in particular. The truth be told, there are some very good, committed, caring and hard-working teachers in our school system.”

Deputy Governor, Stanley Reid, thanked the teachers for their dedication to duty. “Being a good teacher demands a lot of your time in doing research, preparing lesson plans, ensuring you have the resources for your lessons, marking homework, tests and SBAs, finding creative ways of not only reaching children of various abilities, but also using different strategies to manage behaviour,” he said.

Seriously, everyone complaining of the teachers’ attire…the photos were taken at the award ceremony/dinner…this has absolutely nothing to do with clothes and how it affects your children or their education…some people just can’t give a compliment without throwing in something negative criticism.

Hello and good morning my people. Well its very nice to see our educated citizens are succeeding in another country. Now based on the photographs I am wondering why didn’t they submit photos that’s not so revealing like a full dress which covers their shoulders and breast. I am still proud that they are recognizes for their contribution is education.

Teacher Mildred. Don’t want any teacher with such “outlook” to teach my Son. They should be an example in and out of class. Cover the “BREASTS.”

Great work Mrs Hughes nee Joseph. You served your country well at the Social Centre back then; you are now a regional resource in early childhood education. Your days at Oxford were well spent. Continue to make DA proud.
