Ninety years ago, when Toastmasters founder, Dr. Ralph C. Smedley held the first meeting in the basement of a YMCA in Santa Ana, Calif., USA, only a few people showed up. Now, with membership exceeding 313,000 in more than 14,650 clubs in 126 countries, Toastmasters International continues to build on Dr. Smedley’s foundation of teaching public speaking and leadership skills.

Here in the Commonwealth of Dominica, the Toastmasters movement continues to grow with the founding and charter of the Northern District Toastmasters Club in the town of Portsmouth.

The Northern District Toastmasters Club (NDTC) has over twenty-five members and meets every 2nd and 4th Thursday of every month at 6:30 pm at the Conference room of the Central Cooperative Credit Union Ltd. (CCCUL) building on Bay Street in Portsmouth. The CCCUL is the corporate partner for the NDTC.

The Acting GM of the CCCUL says, “We’re extremely happy to support the initiative of the NDTC in an effort to develop a new generation of leaders and public speakers. This will no doubt bear intrinsic self-development benefits to all of its members”.

The education program of the Toastmasters Club is divided into two broad areas of focus The Education and the Leadership tracks, which allow for simultaneous development by each member through their delivery of project speeches and their performances of meeting roles and other initiatives of the Club.

Club president Philip Joseph explains that “the Toastmasters Club is more than just a club. It’s an experience which takes you from the embryonic stage of public speaking and molds you into a formidable leader and speaker”.

The Executive comprises of the following persons:
President Philip Joseph
Vice President of Education- Hilary Joseph
Vice President of Membership- Carlyn Rolle
Vice President of Public Relations- Fenella K.Wenham
Treasurer- Dania Carriere
Secretary- Dennise Andrews
Sergeant-At-Arms- Caryl Baron

Congratulations! You are growing? This is good advertisement. This is an excellent Club for boys and girls of the acceptable age and men and women to join. I call it an educational one which also builds deportment and self-confidence.
I would be interested but I do not reside in D/ca. I have a friend who is a member of the Toastmaster’s Club where I reside. This friend informed me about the Club.
Due to my schedule I have not yet decided to join. Reading your article for the second time encourages me to join. I may do this in some months’ time.

The prime minister should take advantage of either of those clubs so he can stop butchering the English language. Weekes too.
