Kaihil Charles, who was the 2015 Valedictorian of the Dominica Grammar School, has excelled at the May/June Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate (CSEC) examinations.

Charles, obtained 10 grade ones in Mathematics, English, French Integrated Science, History, Principles of Business, Principles of Accounts, Literature, Agriculture, Music and a three in Visual Arts. He attributed his success to prayer, family/school support, diligence and needed sacrifices.

He received the DGS subject awards for French, History, English, Mathematics, Science, Principles of Accounts, Principles of Business and Arts, as well as an award for school service.

“My hard work has indeed paid off – especially in Visual Arts which I pursued only in 5th form. Having started the syllabus that late, I knew that there was always going to be a bit of a challenge. As such, most of my sessions were via Skype due to my heavy schedule. However, with much assistance from my Arts teacher, I am happy to have recorded a grade three. I can say that the efforts of others who assisted me along the way did not go futile,”.

Charles said: “in preparing for the exams some subjects required more practice than studying, as was the case with Accounts, while others like History were a bit more challenging for me to recall all the information that I needed to, so I had to devote more time to these than usual”.

He plans to pursue an Associate’s Degree in Accounting and some Units in Entrepreneurship and Pure Math at the Lead Institute located in Goodwill.

He stated that his greatest source of support came from his family, as “there were times when I would have to stay up and they would stay up with me till 4:30 a.m. to assist with meeting final SBA [School Based Assessment] deadlines and reviews for Mock Exams which clashed”.

“I would like to thank my teachers who sacrificed their school breaks, afternoons and even weekends to assist me and my colleagues who needed that extra time in completion of various SBAs,” Charles stated.
