Top CXC performer attributes his success to early preparation

Dennis Guye

Top local performer of the Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate (CSEC) Exams Dennis L. Guye of the St Mary’s Academy has advised students to begin preparations for the exams well before their due date in order to attain exceptional scores.

Guye, who spoke to Dominica News Online, attributed his success to advance preparation for the exams.

The 17 year-old Castle Comfort resident scored nine ones and a two in the assessment. Among the subjects he studied were Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Principles of Business, Principles of Accounts, Geography, Literature and French.

“I started preparing for CXC since around Easter. So I didn’t have to study as hard immediately before the exams…” he said.

“Prepare for the exams long before you know you have it. Don’t wait until you have a test today for you to go and rush to study, that wouldn’t work.  If you have any friend who does well try and get some help from them,” he recommended.

Guye told DNO that his dream is to become a cardiologist.

Two other SMA students –Denis F. Laurent and Liam K.P. Rolle -both having obtained nine grade 1s, closely followed Guye.

Denzel E. Coipel of the Dominica Grammar School came in 4th with eight grade 1s, one grade 2 and one grade 3. Yende Grell of the Convent High School got eight 1’s and one 2 while Karyntia Joseph of the same school had the identical scores.

Congratulations to all the students! hard work & discipline yields results. I am particularly proud this year to see the boys take the lead, too often we bash our boys and the girls have been in the forefront it is indeed refreshing to be reminded that OUR boys & girls are simply great achievers and the score is all that differentiates them. The boys haven’t been gone anywhere.

Congratulations to the teachers, parents and all those who made these results and the results across the board a success.

THATS the type of stories worth commenting on therefore congratulations are in order to all the students and the furture of our lovely Island. Agreed with that person who suggest that those kids be used in any way possible to inspire others like them that are too weak to carry on. BE it on the radio in print or any other medium. Sadly we may not see lots of comments cause its not politics, BETH, or ROW ROW. come on typical Dominicans give your fullest support and best wishes to those dedicated young ones. That in my poinion is taking us to the next level. I wil be watching the progress of those young men and women.

God bless the next generation and indeed Dominica future is bright. Special thanks should be given to the parents and guardians, teachers, school administrators and the students for making Dominica proud.

@Patat: hey Patat, can you put a few exclamation marks at the end of your name? it would sound better.

  28. August 20, 2010

Also, I noticed that the comments are very clean, and all of them are all thumbs up. What a disciplined attitude to maintain! And it is great that we leaving a good example for our boys and girls.

It is possible that we can continue with that attitude to everyone?

  29. August 20, 2010

One thing that we are certain of is that not all of our boys are heading into the conducts and attitude of young men, such as those wearing sloppy hair, baggy pants or skirts, silver chains around their necks, and all the other stuff, just to go out and hold guns at other people’s head to take a few thousand dollars from them.

Way to go boys. And remember that you are a model to those who are behind you. Those of you who are behind be sure to take the advise of your brother, Dennis Guye.

He is right to the extreme. Do not just depend on the few hours that you spend with your teacher. You need to study on your own, and you need to do that long in advance of your exam date. Otherwise, you do not get the evaluating marks that will qualify you for the credits which you are searching for. Again, I say, boys and girls of Dominica, follow in the paths of Dennis Guye and his two friends.

Congratulations are in order for the young men from the SMA and DGS who have given hope to all young male students around Dominica. For more than ten years the cry from the Education authorities was that Dominican boys were not realizing their full potential.

The results this year must be a turning point in Dominica. A young boy was the 2010 top performer at the Common entrance exams and now at the High School CXC exams more young men are proving themselves and becoming examples for others to follow!!!

I am sure that parents of High School boys will be encouraged to take greater effort at the PTA and take greater pride and effort at motivating their sons and not just their girls.

To all the persons who were behind the scenes supporting these young men I say congratulations – parents , teachers, religious, library, study groups, the Saturday classes, the extra classes, and the society in general rallying for boys to reach for the stars .

I love this kid. I would encourage the Ministry of Education to take this kid and have him do an island tour and speak to kids around the country. Give him a Scholarship and consider him an Honorary Education Ambassador.

Secondly, the Min. Of Edu should embark on an Honor Student Program, where we can fast track certain students in Sciences and Maths….we really do need this now

Min of Education…Technology is our future…we need to start preparing the young minds now…Take a page from Asia.

These young students have a bright future, if they stay on course, away from drugs and those that do it, away from alcohol and them that do it, and away from illicit habits and them that do it, we will find that the path to a bright future in entrenched in the small powerful decisions that are made on a daily basis. Cudos to you guys!!!!!!!!!! (:=
