Trade Ministry embarks on venture to address unemployment amongst youths

Colin McIntyre

An amalgamation of the Small Business Support Unit and the Employment Unit is intended to help address unemployment among Dominica’s youths.

Trade Minister Colin McIntyre has disclosed, the merger, expected within the next few weeks will “trigger off employment for our people.”

“This Dominica Labour Party under the leadership of the honourable prime minister with this new mandate to take Dominica to the next level, we want to address employment, crime and of course cost of living,” he said.

He has given the assurance that government will seriously pursue the merger, “because it’s a concern of the people, they have elected us to take care of their business and we are going to take care of their business,” McIntyre affirmed.

hey there are a few things that come to mind to generate employment.
    1. gang up the youth in diffrent areas;have them do task work in cleaning their areas and pay them encouragingly. eg.there are so much plastic blocking the drains and sidewalks if they clean that it’s a win win situation, the place get clean kids get money the country will be happy.
    2. there are lots of trademen without jobs, they could be ganged up and do sections of drains for a lot of roads and areas even covering the drains with slabs that will make space for pedestrians and make the country look attractive, these small jobs will take some youtes off the streets give them some money and may raise there self esteem. you don’t have to look to have big project to give jobs, is the one one that make two. and there are similar projects in diffrent area, this things can take place. but there should be no bobol in volved, get the money and pay the youtes for there work to encourage them. something that could take us to the next level.

Government needs to wake up! Stop ‘seating on their laurels’ where our Dominican youths are concerned.

We have been hearing the Government’s intention on youth issues since their last term in office and no major strategies or action plans have been put in place to address the serious rate of crime and violence amongst the youth in Dominica.

Too many young persons are unemployed!

Too many young persons are involved in hard drugs!

Too many young persons are involved in petty crimes!

Too many young persons are involved in violence!

Too many young persons are in our state prison!

Too many young persons are inmates at our psychiatric unit!

    Young people need to exhale!

Young people need an avenue to express themselves academically and technically!

We need to assist young persons to be self-sufficient and self-reliant by creating opportunities for them to do so. Development of food processing industries is an example. We have seasonal fruits and vegetables in Dominica that can be processed and preserved to be available throughout the year. I could go on to lists what we are blessed with in Dominica – the natural resources are available, and the by-products are possible!!

Government needs to seriously focus on creating employment opportunities for the youth!

Mr McIntyre we welcome this breaking news and we anticipate that your ministry will be very proactive in matters concerning the youth and this amalgamation will be the precursor of productivity amongst the youth, to facilitate economic development.

Once again, I do not mean to be a cog in the wheel, because I wholly support the PM and his ministers in carrying out their responsibilities. However, we are always being told the “whys”, not the “hows”. How will it be done? How will the merger trigger employment?

We are constantly having multiple press releases to inform citizens of programs coming down the valley. Again, we are being told things in dribs and drabs. Why are we are making announcements when we do not have all the pieces(or at least most of the pieces) together ? Is that meant to appease some of us? We need some details. Hearing what is going to be done is one thing, because it gives a sense of hope. Hearing how things are going to be done is what drives the machine.

The same thing was done with the west coast project. Droplets of information spread out over a period of time, but still no concrete details.

I couldn’t find more details on the government’s website regarding this news.

Great move……. unemployment amongst the youth can only lead to crime, violence and drugs, if nothing is done to address the issue and provide a solution beneficial to the youth and the country as a whole.
