Twenty young women have completed an Intermediate Creative Manicure and Pedicure Apprenticeship Training Programme here on the island.

The programme was financed by the Government of Dominica through the Dominica Employment and Small Business Support Agency and implemented by Maanz Ltd.

Maanz Limited is a newly formed company that offers consultancy, training and engineering services to the general public, youth, and businesses on a whole.

Marilyn Morris, proprietor of Maanz Ltd, said the programme was divided into two categories.

“The students were trained in two different aspects, one aspect of small business management, how to manage your business, your finances and how to deal with your customers and the aspect of manicure and pedicure, dealing with issues of the hands and of the feet and also how to take care of the hands and the feet,” she said.

The programme ran for eight weeks and Morris is hoping that ongoing support and financing for the development of the participants continues.

Director of the Dominica Employment and Small Business Support Agency, Alexander Stephenson, said students will be expected to write some short answer essays and do some multiple- choice questions for the theoretical part of the programme.

“Students will have to express themselves in terms of how they would run their business, how they would receive customers, their quality of customer service as well as how they would go about marketing their business and budgeting, the money management aspect of the business which is very critical,” he explained.

Ashley Anthony, a participant of the programme stated that she was excited at the new skills she had acquired. “I learnt different skills in terms of how to place the acrylic on the nail. I also learned different techniques in terms of 3D designs with the acrylic itself,” she remarked.

Another participant said she thought the programme was excellent. “I think this programme which would enable us to start our own businesses, to be entrepreneurs, our own bosses was good,” she noted. “I know once this is over, I will start my own business. I’d like to thank the Government of Dominica and Maanz Ltd for bringing forth this programme to us.”

Dominicans are a bunch of haters man. These comments below are appalling. This is a valuable skill and they can make a very good living from it. Some people just so closed minded. Way to go young ladies, do something you love, unlike me with a college degree in something I am no longer passionate about, only doing it because the money is good. YOLO… lol follow your dreams ladies, work for yourselves, don’t slave over growing somebody else’s company.

Congratulations ladies. This is a worthwhile profession. People need to take care of their hands, fingers and toe nails and feet.
Some people are too busy to do that for themselves and so they make an appointment with one who will also pamper their fingers and feet. :) It is similar to going to the hairdresser for also a facial.
There is flesh around the fingers and toes and these too need to be taken care of in order to maintain beautiful and healthy hands and feet.
There are doctors, named accordingly for every part of our body. Those doctors are necessary. So are you as a manicurist and pedicurist.
Good luck and success in your new career. God bless you!

Just an idea- please ask your friend if she had applied to offer her professional services. I am out of Dominica but keep in touch with things Dominica via DNO and did see an advertisement on DNO for persons to submit their proposals to offer their services.

I have visited the Facebook pages of the NDFD and have seen similar pictures and they are in the private sector!!!!!!!!

This is not what is needed in Dominica. It shows lack of insight.

My dear it shows lack of insight on your part only. These young people are being empowered to rely on themselves and not the government. In these hard economic times self employment is the way to go. Congratulations to the participants.

Any suggestion from you on what is needed????? If you do not agree with what is being done, then you should give an alternative. There is no need to criticize without being objective and not giving alternative solution(s). Just saying!

of all things and in this hard financial situation, is that something to teach our youth?

Anything the youths are taught in this hard financial situation will still have the financial situation with us!!!! So what is your point exactly?

This person, 4 realz, is narrow minded. This is part of progress. I am pleased to see they have learned a new career.
Dominicans cannot only depend on office work as also government work. There is a lot to learn and to make them ready for a career.
It is not only in Dominica. Every country has its share of economical problems. Who knows down the road which way the tables will turn? They must prepare themselves for come what may in the future.

I don’t understand you and your question, its a worthwhile skill. I get a manicure and pedicure once a month and pay $50 each that’s a hundred dollars, if these young women have 5 clients a day at a hundred dollars each for 6 days……do the maths, and remove their expenses. There’s no scientific thinking there my friend 4 realz, women love to look good.
It’s better that than selling their dignity. Way to go skills development.

It is a booming business in progressive countries.

That’s the height of ignorance 4 realz. You need to know in difficult economic times people turn towards personal grooming more than ever. It is a way of lifting their spirits. This is the reason often times people lament how can so & so have no money, or crying brokes but hair, nails always done. While some see this practice as misplaced values during a crisis, studies have shown that many persons attribute their stablity and stride to continue admist financial hardships on the fact that they held on to something as basic as a pedicure. The other side to all this, there is no greater time for these young people to acquire such skills and poise themselves for the emerging market. A good manicurist can make crazy honest money instead of begging. No shame in learning and growing.

Is this “training” accredited? If so, by whom? Can these participants, wishing to deepen their knowledge at the university level, local or foreign, take their credits along with them? These, surely are questions that need urgent answers.

    Ah waiting …

    • Pas La

Urgent? Seriously? Just congratulate the young people and wish them well.
