Two athletes get gov’t scholarships

Shanee Angol and Luan Gabriel

Two of Dominica’s top budding athletes have been promised scholarships up to University level by the government of Dominica.

Speaking at the opening of a new police station in Grand Bay on Tuesday afternoon, Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit, said the scholarships will go to Luan Gabriel and Shanee Angol as a form of recognizing the achievements of the island’s youth.

“We have to promote and recognize the achievements of our young people,” he said.

Gabriel is a 2012 CARIFTA gold medalist in the 200-meter dash while Angol, a 15 year-old student of the Pierre Charles Secondary School (PCSS), captured gold in the U-17 javelin throw in the just concluded 2013 CARIFTA Games.

The prime minister said the young people are often criticized and not recognized. “Often times we hear people criticize young people,” he noted. “They hold young people responsible for almost everything that goes wrong in society…”

According to Skerrit the awarding of the scholarships was a decision taken by cabinet. “I would like to announce this evening that cabinet has taken a decision to grant to both Luan Gabriel and Shanee Angol a full scholarship to continue high school education,” he revealed. “Secondly a full scholarship to attend the Dominica State College and thirdly a full scholarship to attend university.”

The athletes are expected to maintain a high level of performance during their entire education career, the prime minister said.

Anyway in my young days at primary and secondary, I run and played so much netball and volley ball for my schools and was a good player but not much opportunity then, maybe if we had that I would have been a millionaire.
I encourage the young ones to go for it; but the Government must keep the promise.

Would you rather him not give the schols? Or give a part scholarship, and insisting on the parents and extended family contribute to meeting the other expenses, like books, stipend, etc.?

Too much freeness, too mucy largesse in the land.

What about those students who were promised financial assistance, and cannot get that assistance to pay their school fees. More empty promises? What about those students on scholarship in the U.S who had to stay out of school because they could not pay their fees? What about those state college students whose schools fees have not been paid as yet.

I always wonder why we cannot just appreciate the help we get from – a scholarship is promised which is a big help for the parents. I see, absolutely, nothing wrong with the parents providing for their children, whom they brought into the world.

I am happy for the all the accolades and schlarships given to these young athletes.I do hope it does not stop here.I hope we are not going to be selective as to who get these accalades. Are we not going to recognise, for instance, the young u15 cricketers ,who have just won the Windwards u15 tournment ?Are we saying that their achievemnt is of a lesser fit that the young track and field stars stated above ?Should’t they get the same accalades and recognisation? Are they not youngstars who have achieved?
    what are we saying?
be fair in your Judgement Mr PM and the so call sports authorities.Indeed it would be real sad and disheartening to not do the same ,for they have all worked hard, represented country and have in what ever small way ,make us real proud to be dominican.
I rememebered last year a young under 13 cricketer make a unbeaten 107 runs and his recognisation and accalades was on serious down low. This had not been done in 12 years. No one seem to care then.Wasn’t that a great achievement by a youngstas?Wasn’t that spectacular enough to warranty some form of reward? Tell me if i am wrong?
Surely as a youngstar on the outside watching in, i am confused!there seem to be some form of preference even in sports!

I KNOW SOMEBODY THAT KNOW SOMEBODY! THAT IS SO TRUE!

I listened to the Of The Field Program with Mr. Trevor Shillingford. Did you know the DAAA got $42,000 from the DOC and $20,000 from the public to travel to the CARIFTA games? Why did they wait until a few weeks before the games to seek funding? Isn’t it the responsibility of the association to raise funds for its athletes to attend competitions? I am not hearing of any athletic meet organized by the association for fund raising or any fun raising activity. The Government has no say in the appointment of the Directors of the Association, no say in which athlete respresents Dominica at any competition, so why therefore is it a big issue as to the Government’s assistance for travel to the games? Every story has two sides, please listen to both.

yes, but what about the children who work hard academically in the hope of getting a scholarship to give their hard working parents an ease and dont get it after getting 10 ones in cxc and 4 A’s in DSC because it goes to these girls who got gold medals in a competition not internally but regionally! Congrats though to girls, i hope you works for those scholarships!

Young people be careful with these “promises” of scholarships from this or any government – make sure you have a back up plan. I know of a number of students who were “promised” scholarships, given commitment letters to the schools and completed their programs without seeing a cent from government. Their friends and family had to take loans after the schools refused to allow them to continue with outstanding fees. They were fortunate to have people who could take loans on their behalf but not everyone is…like the many others who came home without being able to complete their programs…have your back up plan guys!

So if you fortunate enough to take loan to study, why deprive an unfortunate person and ask government to pay for your studies?

      Some of us too greedy.

Skerrit trying to get some cheap PR publicity after his government shamefully amd miserably failed to extend $1 to help meet the costs of the athletes’participation in the games. My comments are not negative but are truthful observations. This man likes to play the role of Santa Claus. He doles out money whenever there’s widepread expressed public displeasure with his government over an issue or event.

Some people fall for that trick not me.

    • Yes I
      April 10, 2013

Did you extend a $1? Why do we cal on Govt to cover the cost of everything? Where is the private sector and the general public?

Common people. grow up and stop this non sense. Govt. Not and should not be expected to cover everything. Exactly why our national development lagging behind. Our people have a false, confused sense and expectation of Govt.

Hmmm…take your training seriously, get a gold medal in a internationally recognized sports event whereby you promote Dominica in front of millions, keep your grades up, and in return, your educational dreams will be handed to you on a plate!

I think that’s a brilliant trade. I wish that had been around in my time. Great initiative Gvt of Dominica!

Forget the past did you say? That is exactly why we are where we at today, stuck with this incompetent gov’t. That is a cheap political gimmick by a desperate individual. Had he been able to come to the rescue of the athletes, no award of scholarship without the approval of cabinet would have been made. So you and this peeping Tom can rant and rave all you like buy the truth is the truth.
Also why wasn’t the minister of sport, the pal. rep for the area who was present at the ceremony the one making the announcement? April 10, 2013

so you’d rather they not get eh scholarships?

they went to the games didn’t they? The government cant do all.

Personally i’d ratehr scrape by to pay my passage to go run, do well, get home and get a SCHOLARSHIP to a university where I can enhance my abilities.

Dominica cannot do it for them… so the best out of the situation is the scholarship.

You cant have it good all the time – you sometimes have to work hard to help your ownself. The government is not and cannot always be responsible for everything. It would have been nice if they can pay for the trips etc…but that’s not the Dominican reality

    • Yes I
      April 10, 2013

      Papa Dom,
Would you stand to the face of the Athletics and tell them this Scholarship is not a good idea? WHat impression would there have of you?

It is time you realize there is a private sector. A larger private sector is necessary to increase growth in our GDP. We can not expect Govt to cover the cost of every event, function, medical bill, travel expense… etc etc the list goes on. Everything that happens or need to be met, we call on the Govt to do it?

Where is the general public? where is the private sector? Govt Cant cover it all. I am sure someone when a child ask mommy for something, mommy responses, “ask you father” when father is asked, Father sometimes say ask uncle Smith to send it for you… etc..

Govt does not have unlimited funds. BUt strategic decisions must be made to motivate our young people. NO one will remember who covers the cost travel expenses, but everyone will remember the scholarships that were issued!!!

      Its not politics, its governance!

    • Peeping Tom
      April 10, 2013

So, Papa Dom, instead of supporting the government’s decision to secure the education of these two deserving athletes, you choose to fly all sorts of absurdities under the banner of “truth”. Here is truth, Papa Dom: These two athletes are two Dominicans who will never have to worry about how they will attain a university education. Here is truth: The families of these two young persons will NOT have to divert resources to educate, i.e empower, their children. They will now use their money in other ways. You want more truth, Papa Dom? Now, i doh want you toofaying under hypertension so, i will ease up on you.

No, Papa Dom, Peeping Tom does not “rant and rave” especially not about humourous posts like what you usually dish out. I chuckle. I chuckle that with every failed attempt you guys make to remove the shine from the accomplishments of the DLP and honest Dominicans, you actually make yourselves look bad and you increase the PM’s popularity. Lol! So, keep doing what you do because it helps those whom you hate and it tickles me to so how well you do it.
