Winners of “I am Dominica. Are You?” scrapbook competition get prizes

Preschool winners

The Leo Club of Dominica and Discover Dominica Authority presented prizes to winners of the first I am Dominica. Are You? scrapbook competition.  The overall winner of the competition was Brielle Clarke of Sunflower Preschool whose school fees for the 2012-2013 academic year was paid for by the Leo Club.  She also received art supplies.

The competition was held among four preschools in the north – Pennville Preschool, Thibaud Preschool, Paix Bouche Social Centre Preschool and Sunflower Preschool.  Preschoolers had to design scrapbooks to depict their love for their country and ways in which they can help promote and develop Dominica.  This could have been done through the use of photos, pictures and drawings.   Points were awarded for creativity, interpretation of the I am Dominica.  Are You? concept and neatness.

The Leo Club’s Director of Early Childhood, Ms. Andrea Seaman provided an overview of the mission of the Leo Club and its outreach to the youth.  She thanked the preschool teachers and parents for the support given to the students in making the scrapbook competition a success. Ms. Kathleen Cuffy, Head of Product Development who represented the Director of Tourism at the event also commended preschoolers for their participation in the event.

Winners from the other schools were:  Akina George – Pennville Preschool, Niah Massicott – Paix Bouche Social Centre Preschool, Mia Didier – Thibaud Preschool.    A special prize for creativity was awarded to Shawn-Daryl John of Sunflower Preschool.  His scrapbook was designed in the shape of the map of Dominica and decorated with leaves from the flamboyant tree edged with jumbie beads.  Notable mention prizes were also awarded to  Jayda Boston and Jayhim Laville of the Sunflower Preschool.

Participating schools received certificates of participation and educational supplies.

Discover Dominica Authority thanks the Leo Club of Dominica for partnering on this initiative and looks forward to future collaboration.

The competition was judged by Steve Joseph – Northern District Officer, Fenella Wenham – President, National Youth Council, and Kidron Alexander – Chairperson of the Paix Bouche Village Council.

This is an early start. I like the theme, “I am Dominican. Are you?” Congratulations! You have reason to be proud of your achievement with the help of your teacher.
They are so cute and intelligent. They bring a smile to my face, reminding me of my youth then, as young as they are. Keep it up! Good luck for your future endeavors.

Congrats to the winners and their teachers. I would just like to know how much of the work was done by the children themselves. Children are more competent than we know and we should allow them the opportunity to show what the can do without us getting too much involved.
This is the age when they should be given teh chance to decide for themselves with guidance and should also make an imput towards that which is theirs.
Later n in life they will be able to make reasonable judgements.

      @ AMMM

Give them the opportunity; take an interest in them during their scholastic years; guide them and they will excel. Children need loving and positive encouragement.
