A fair which places emphasis on community and youth development has been carded for Saturday, August 24, at the Newtown Savannah.
One of the organizers of the event, Glenda Samuel, said the fair is the brainchild of a group of locals who came together to organize it under the guidance of international NGO, PLAC 21.
The day was organized to mark with International Youth Day, which took place on August 12.
“The theme for the Youth Day was Youth Migration Moving Development Forward. The fair was organized as means of networking with the other established youth groups and mobilizing them to include more youth in whatever it is that they are doing,” Samuel said
Samuel pointed out that the fair will consist of two segments; the morning segment will feature activities of youth groups are involved in while established groups will be recruiting new volunteers for their groups. There will also be entertainment and various motivational speeches.
The second segment, in the afternoon, will take on a lighter side where families will be encouraged to participate in traditional games such as lime and spoon, sack race and face painting.
“It is an entire day event. The objective of the day is to encourage families to come together, for parents to help their children to select groups that they would want to belong to,” Samuel stated. “They would also be able to listen to motivational speeches from different individuals.”
She remarked that the fair will give the youth an opportunity to showcase their talents in song and drama among other things.
Samuel stated that because the emphasis is on community and youth development, the fair is very important and is encouraging young people to turn out in large numbers.
Various upcoming artists such as KAYYO and Dynamic Ryan are scheduled to perform at Saturday’s event.
The Dominica Youth Division, National Youth Council, Dominica Boy Scouts, and the Girl Guides are some of the youth groups that will be represented at the fair.
It is scheduled to begin at 9:00 am.
PLAC 21 is a non governmental humanitarian and development assistance organization. It focuses on youth and women development.
Its Caribbean headquarters is in Marie Galante.
A wonderful idea …
That’s very good for families in Dominica especially the young people who will be given the opportunity to showcase their talents and also enjoy a totally fun filled day kudos to the organizers of this event…however due to the day selected for this event many families and youth can’t attendbecause they keep theseventh day sabbath which Iis Saturday..so I’m just asking if this is something that can be taken into consideration at next year’s event planning..would be greatly appreciated. .Thank you lol I
The. Lol is a typo ..I apologize .
Great initiative to keep the youth focussed and engaged during the summer vacation period. I am encouraging the youth and their families to turn out in large numbers to make the event a success.
It takes parents to make a child but a village/community to raise a child.
Kudos to the organizers, keep up the good work.
good going
