Parliamentary Representative of the Salisbury Constituency Jesma Paul-Victor strongly believes that electoral reform should be an ongoing process.
She made the disclosure during parliament this week.
“We must recognize that electoral reform is not a one-time event, but it should be an ongoing process, ” she said. “As society evolves so must our electoral systems. Continuous reviews, recommendations, feedback, and adaptation are necessary to address emerging challenges and uphold democratic principles.”
According to Paul-Victor, one should also remember that democracy is not merely about holding elections, “it is about ensuring that those elections are free, fair and reflective of the people’s will.”
She asserted that the fight for electoral integrity is a shared responsibility requiring commitment from government, political parties, society, and most importantly the people.
Meanwhile, Opposition Senator Lorraine Henderson-Reid spoke on “treating”, referring to the transportation of voters and entertainment of those voters coming into the country to vote.
“Mr. Speaker, if your sole purpose of coming into the country is to cast a vote and the ticket is gifted to you, this is a blaring and obvious act of treating which should not be overlooked or omitted,” she argued. “So, I am saying if your sole purpose is coming into the country just to vote and you are gifted a ticket and spending money for that purpose it should be considered as treating.”
Henderson made it clear that she was not suggesting that Dominican citizens who live abroad should be allowed to come into the country to vote but insisted, “If you are coming for this specific reason, it is treating.”

Where the topic of treating and bribery is concerned, it can be as little as a pal bubble gum. IF you accept any “gift” with the understanding/notion that you are expected to vote for a specific candidate or party, THAT IS TREATING AND BRIBERY. WTF is that so hard to understand.
