Following on the success of her hit single “Doo-Doo Mwen” (sung by Maxine Alleyne) Dominican song-writer, Barbara Bully-Thomas has released a new CD featuring six songs, five of which are written by herself and one by her brother, Alwin Bully.
The CD is appropriately entitled “CREOLE, CHRISTMAS AND JAZZ” to reflect the mix of musical genres included in the package – there are three songs in Kweyol, two in English and one in both languages. Four are Christmas songs.
The CD opens with Maxine’s impressive new arrangement of “Gloria” (which was a hit for Ophelia some years ago when it first appeared within Alwin bully’s Christmas musical “Folk Nativity”). The three other Christmas songs are equally impressive. “Selebwe Nwel” with lead vocals by Maxine and back-up by the Sixth Form Sisserou Singers delivers a full folk sound in the traditions of the big Folk Choirs of the Caribbean.
It takes us dancing into the middle of a rural Christmas fete while reminding us of all the seasonal traditions of the region. It is sure to be a party favourite. “Maybe It’s ‘Cause It’s Christmas” is sung by Barbara herself in sultry Lena Horne classic, big-band, jazz styling.
Arranged by St. Lucian maestro, Boo Hinkson, it includes an excellent scat section that is certain to be a hit with jazz lovers in particular. The third Christmas song “A Christmas Kiss” is sung by Maxine and carries a playful, catchy melody that goes straight to the heart. A terrific tenor sax solo by virtuoso Rob “Z” Taylor and a dance-hall rap give it mass appeal.
The two songs that are not about Christmas are “Dou-Dou Mwen” which continues to please music lovers everywhere and “Come to Dominica” a new promotional song extolling the wonders of the Nature Isle. But what is really special about this one is Tasha P’s exciting calypso rendition and Cornell Phillip’s imaginative and extremely danceable arrangement.
All songs were produced by Cornell Phillip and recorded at Imperial Publishing in Dominica except “Maybe ‘Cause It’s Christmas” which was arranged and produced by Boo Hinkson and recorded at Boo’s Studio in St. Lucia.
In summary “CREOLE, CHRISTMAS AND JAZZ” is the perfect package for the Creole or the Christmas season or for anyone who really loves great Caribbean music. The CD is available at music stores in Roseau or by calling 277 3971.

Cornell Phillip (fingers) is dominican musical mistro, formally of WCK Fame. Pioneer of Dominica’s Bouyon Music, one of the best keyboardist and Producer in the Caribbean.
Who is Cornell Phillip? I have been hearing this name all over. Sounds like he is a major contributor in the development of dominica music. After hearing his name again on national radio from the WCMF commentary I must ask.
He is the “C” in WCK.
Founding member of WCK. Well known keyboardist, song writer/arranger/engineer/producer.
Returning National, before I read your pseudonym, I was wondering which foreigner was asking such a question about who is this Cornel Phillip. LOL. Anyway, Here’s something I pulled off the net about the legendary Cornel Phillip on your behalf: http://www.partydominica.com/cornell-phillip/
Alas too bad. Return quickly papa….Away Nationals should try to keep up with whats happening in Dominica if they plan to return.
