Bully stages play in December

Bully

After a hiatus of two years, Dr. Alwin Bully, Artistic Director of the Caribbean Theatre Network (Production Company), will stage the controversial Jamaican play ECSTASY, at the Arawak House of culture on December 9 – 11, 2011.

Written for mature audiences by acclaimed Jamaican playwright, David Heron, ECSTASY explores the sensitive issues of class, colour and sex as people try to find their place in a Caribbean society whose value systems are often based on family background, home address, workplace and what car they drive.

The play makes those points excitingly clear by clashing the vibrant and popular Dancehall ghetto culture against the power and prejudices of Jamaica’s uptown sector with its set ways, unwritten rules and clear behavioural expectations.

So when Jewel Brown, a sexy and ambitious Dance Hall Queen from the under-belly of one of Kingston’s meanest ghettos meets Richard Foster, an over-protected rich boy in search of himself, the situation is certain to explode, making ECSTASY one of the most entertaining and audience-pleasing plays to hit the Caribbean theatre scene in many years.

This Dominican production stars world class singer and entertainer Daryl Bobb who was last seen on stage in August Wilson’s “FENCES”, popular calypsonian Marja ‘Lady Star’ Jeffers, top ranking Radio personality and Entertainment Manager Miguel Labadie, Courts dynamic Marketing Manager Letricia Cadette, and thrilling new-comers  Justina Worrell and Leona John.

Stage Management is by Gloria Augustus and Curtis Clarendon while set design is by Alwin Bully, Props by Sonia Riviere and Costume coordination by Claudia Henderson.

Tickets go on sale Wednesday, November 30th.

upgrade? What does that mean? Live theatre and movies are two distinct artforms and both are relevant. If anything, live theatre is more a test of an actor’s skills as there are no takes. You have to hit the mark in front of a live audience.

Are you for real, 123? Are you a simpleton as simple in understanding as 123? The works of playwrights are always being staged over and over. How else are their works to live on? How else are judgements of their standards are to be judged if they are not repeatedely showcased and studied? The play has never been performed in Dominica to my knowledge. And even if it is being staged again, nothing is wrong in that. It provides an opportunity for people like to see it for the first time.

To all you haters out there, Alwyn Bully does not settle for mediocre or less than mediocre talents. He deliberately selects people across the cultural spectrum who have the talent/abilities to play a given role unlike other directors who assign roles to people regardless of whether they would be credible in the role simply because the actors are in their troupe. We have had the absurd situation of young men in their twenties playing the role of grandfatherly figures and, to add insult to injury, undisguised in costume and voice.

Alwyn, I trust you to give us a credible production.

Dear Conscious/Anonymous.. I am not too sure what plays in Dominica you have been watching but we have 3 young writers in Dominica and they do not do what you just say…above the three there is Steve Hyacinth who has been writing for over 25 years and i have not seen what you have described in his plays..then there is Alex Bruno..he plays has reach far as Africa and I have not seen that…Then there is young Mikael Ferrol, and i have not seen that happen…So if you beleive by bringing down the constant local talent that we have in Dominica to alleviate Mr Bully that is wrong. All three men mentioned have written plays that are of DOMINICAN THEMED, THEY WROTE WHAT IS BEING PERFORMED

He is staging a play that has never been staged in Dominica. How is that recycling?

Theater productions is a different ball game that television or movies.

Though your comment may be the shortest on here, but for some reason I detect a bit of hate and anger. Why??
