Daniel “Johnny D” Fadelle’s move to Toronto, Canada has been the building block to pursuing his musical career.
The 21-year-old Goodwill native, who is now a music producer and recording artiste, took his first knock at composing in 2003 or 2004 as a 3rd form student of the Saint Mary’s Academy (SMA).
“I used to re-write already made music, as in the lyrics, and then later on started piano lessons but that was short-lived,” Fadelle remarked during an instant message interview from his Toronto dwelling.
Thanks to his father, who pushed him to become musically involved he explored his talent. While here, he joined the Kross Vybz Band.
“Like anyone else I loved music, but I always thought I could make my own, so I started to rap… The band thing helped me learn how to play different instruments and how to make beats. I wanted to make something that my friends could enjoy,” he added.
Following his move to Canada in 2006 to pursue studies at college, he saw many opportunities to develop himself artistically. It was not until these last two years he began taking up music seriously as a career.
“I made a whole new crowd of friends and learned so many different techniques I could use, as well as styles. At the same time, I also felt I had to work and practice harder to keep up since most of them were more experienced than I was, so it was definitely a lot of help,” Fadelle admits.
His influence spans from rap artiste/producers Dr. Dre. Timbaland and Eminem, to local bouyon band- WCK and reggae acts Bob and Damian Marley, as well as Black Chiney,
Currently, he is completing a Bachelor’s Degree in Conflict Studies and Human Rights with a major in Criminology (Social Sciences). Like any other young adult working and attending school classes, things are not all smooth sailing for the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of music production company, Island Storm Music.
“Honestly, I’ve had to make a lot of sacrifices. School right now is my number one priority; music comes after that. I make sure to balance my time so that I don’t fall behind on either, because they are both important to me. Most times music would be held back because of my studies. As far as my social life, I’m able to go out to parties and club events given that I have the time to do so, so I’d be out networking with people, or just enjoying myself. I sometimes go out to collect more ideas and material for my music,’ according to him.
Now Johnny D collaborates with and produces for other Canadian artists including Jamaican Renee Robinson and fellow producer Nevardo “PerroGrande” Dean. Dean and Fadelle are putting together another group of singers. He has also worked with Dominican Cecil Joseph to produce one of his current tracks.
His solo project is in the works and is faring “pretty well”. The multifaceted album will have something for everyone, Johnny D boasts, featuring Reggae, Dancehall, Soca and Hip-Hop.
In contrasting Dominica’s music life with that of Canada’s he comments, “It’s much more focused and organized. I don’t want to say that the people here are more serious than artistes in Dominica; it is just that I find they work and take it much more seriously. This is an industry which people take seriously and artistes handle things in a much more professional way in my opinion, no matter how big or small they may be.”
His expectations for the future are optimistic as he hopes to achieve success with his education and music. “I hope to be recognized for doing something that I love and hope that my music will get through to the masses in Dominica, Canada, the US and ultimately the world.”
