DFC considering dengue outbreak in its preparations for WCMF

The Dominica Festivals Committee (DFC) has assured the public that it is considering the issue of dengue in its preparations for the World Creole Music Festival (WCMF).

Speaking at a press conference yesterday, DFC Events Director Natalie Clarke said the committee is working with the environmental health office in trying to formulate a strategy to deal with the situation.

“We’re going to be going back and forth with the chief environmental officer on what we would like to see in terms of the actual venue and around the venue because as you know we have a beautiful Roseau river flowing right behind us with a lot of challenges there,” Clarke said.

“We will be working out a strategy for those three nights – before and after – to see how we can shape something that would cover ourselves and all these wonderful people coming to our island, from in particular the French islands,” she stated.

In recent months there has been a surge in reported cases of dengue on the island. For the period July to August, 184 cases were reported with 162 from the Roseau Health District. This area includes the Roseau South, Roseau Valley, Roseau North, and Roseau Central up to the Mahaut area.

In early august health officials had confirmed that the French Island of Martinique was experiencing a dengue fever epidemic.
