Dominican-born actress to star in first Caribbean mobile soap opera

Germina Jno Baptiste

In the UK, the COI and Department for Children, Schools and Families (DCSF) launched a mobile drama series two years ago produced by Collywood to teach teenagers the importance of using condoms. After signing up to their website users started following the 22 weeks long series.

Every Friday they received an SMS to download and watch the latest 60″ episode.

Collywood is looking to do the same thing in Dominica and other Caribbean Islands.

Junior Hart CEO of Collywood says. “We are aiming to become the market leaders in providing good Caribbean contents such as movies and Caribbean soap operas for the developing 4G platform. With mobile phones becoming mini TV viewing ports, Collywood been positioning itself for a few years now getting ready for this mobile entertainment explosion.”

Hart believes that time has  arrived.

Collywood have started working on a Mobile Soap Opera starring Germina Jno Baptiste, a national of Dominica to spear head this exciting project.

Hart said, “We are interested in talking to the communication giants such as LIME or DIGICEL in the Caribbean and depending on which of them can see and run with our vision of providing something different away from the usual music and sports entertainment which have been dominating these services for years. I believe that people will want to watch Caribbean soap operas and Caribbean movies on their mobile phone handset which I believe will blow up in the Caribbean and abroad if packaged correctly and distributed digitally through our global digital distribution network to various service providers on license.”

Collywood Mobile Soap talks about the lives of six teenagers touching issues such as sex, unwanted pregnancy and sexually and transmitted infections. Collywood will be looking to negotiate with the mobile networks the download of every episode and subscribers can transfer files by blue tooth.

Also, the mobile soap will also take strong advantage of interactivity with the audience also allowing viewers to engage with the episodes and through interaction, receive music tracks, texts and pictures. At the end of each episode the viewer is given the opportunity to make a choice and formulate their own opinion about the situation.

Alternatively, the story line ends on a cliff hanger, which is resolved when the user interacts with the programme.
