Caribbean Theatre Network is bringing back to the Dominican public, David Heron’s controversial play ECSTASY.
This play which was performed to enthusiastic houses for three nights in December will be on stage at the Arawak House of Culture at 8pm on Sunday January 29, 2012.
Written for mature audiences by acclaimed Jamaican playwright, David Heron, ECSTASY explores the sensitive issues of class, colour and sex as people try to find their place in a Caribbean society whose value systems are often based on family background, home address, workplace and what car they drive.
The play’s promoters say it makes those points so excitingly clear that it has audiences offering advice to the characters as it clashes the vibrant and popular Dancehall ghetto culture against the power and prejudices of Jamaica’s uptown sector with its set ways, unwritten rules and clear behavioural expectations.
They explain further that when Jewel Brown, played by Marja “Lady Star”Jeffers, a sexy and ambitious Dance Hall Queen from the under-belly of one of Kingston’s meanest ghettos meets Richard Foster, played by Daryl Bobb, an over-protected rich boy in search of himself, the situation explodes taking the audience with it and, making ECSTASY one of the most entertaining and thought-provoking plays to hit the Dominican theatre scene in many years.
This Dominican production also stars Radio personality and Entertainment Manager Miguel Labadie, Courts Marketing Manager Letricia Cadette, and thrilling new-comers Justina Worrell and Leyona John.
Stage Management is by Gloria Augustus and Curtis Clarendon while set design is by Alwin Bully, Props by Sonia Riviere and Costume coordination by Claudia Henderson.
A good play to Jamaican standards but Bully has done much better than that.
The play is centered around one main plot with subplots or any real message.
Uptown boy has a taste of downtown girl and mother gone crazy.
I wish Bully would write something which reflects the signs of the times in DA like he did in the past.
The played was staged by Mr bully written by Jamaican David Heron.
@a mom I agree with you… and its hats off not “hearts off”
I think it would be a good idea to put on this play during the Mas Donik season, as lots of us in the diaspora will be on island and would appreciate seeing a local theatrical production.
if possible, can the producers consider this request……the bulk of visitors shoul be arriving the week before the carnival….
