Electra hits calypso arena with “A Woman’s Worth”

Cover of the new single

Sherian ‘Elektra’ Letang has entered the calypso arena for the first time with the buzzed-about composition “A Woman’s Worth.”

Elektra’s debut for the 2013 calypso season comes after ten years of work as a vocalist in the local music industry.

Her fame heightened when she performed for three years as the lead vocalist with the popular concert band Fanatik.

The calypso “A Woman’s Worth” pays tribute to the mammoth contribution of women in various areas of life, locally and further afield.

The song is written by Michelle Nicholson from Tobago and the House of Badjohns (HOB) based in Trinidad, and arranged by Peter Letang of Swinging Stars fame.

It was mixed and mastered and the vocals recorded at Music Box Studios owned by Kendel Laurent of Triple K fame. Other music heavyweights also added their expertise to the composition. The bass was done by Freddie Nicholas, and the guitar by Jerry Moulon.

Elektra will be performing this calypso season at the Stardom Tent and is slated to compete with the rendition “A Woman’s Worth” in the calypso quarter finals organized by the Dominica Calypso Association on Saturday January 12, 2013.

Electra need to tell us the Dominican people what is new in this song we do not know already, think this is an exhausted topic and she must be advised to move on to the real issues in Dominica, is she afraid to speak of the issues in Dominica, if so she must leave the stage for those who are brave to handle it, the Dominican people listen to this song many moons ago in song.

Former classmate from St Johns School and PSS and so I wish her best of luck in the competition. She has a good voice but I don’t really like the lyrics. Some of the words are awkward. She will get some shine because of who she and her husband are. I wouldn’t be surprised if she goes pretty far in the competition.

Great voice, not so great calypso. The melody is recycled and seems to change at some point in the song. Lyrically the song is weak, a womans worth is much more than what she sings about. for christ sake give women more credit than that. This calypso is hyped just because of who is singing it.

great song… but the message has been said already… and this is what’s killing the sting of this song… the fact that Tasha P did it with Woman Time, makes this song lose some buzz… and this is an honest opinion… so ms letang.. your second song should be of the same effort or better but a more touching and closer to home topic… you may even sing about, same sex marriage or the homosexual discussion in dominica… or how we should go back to agriculture… just something different that will make people listen… but ladies, enough of them woman power songs… tasha p’s woman time which took the crown will make allu effort go to waste…. and some people may so.. oh hater, go and do better nah etc… but ms letang and others heed this warning… dominica is very small and tasha won like 2 season’s ago… woman time is still very fresh…

Congratulation to the young lady for joining the calypso vybezzz and bring her talent once more to the front. What i dont get is why the hype over her, there are other female new comers with great voice on the scene as well, like Rachael. Even on the radio, they cant refer to the sherian without saying, she is daddy chess wife – duh we all know that by now. I would rather see her stand on her own calypso feet. I am not a hater and i hope people will see the point am making. I love her song and the words a right on q…..but please “media” treat the others just the same.

This is meant to help the competitor make changes to her betterment. I listened, unfortunately, you lost my attention mid way. You have a very special voice, however, the delivery lacks the skill needed to capture my attention for the entirety. You’ve got to be a part of the song, need more emotion. Remember, there is more to it than a good voice. You must have your audience mesmerized. All the best!

Congratulations, Elektra. A well crafted and beautifully delivered calypso.

The topic is not original, the perspective in which it is handled may be. The voice is clear and melodious. Good musical arrangement. The punchlines are sometimes weak. It is however, one of the best i have heard so far, on par with that of her husband. No doubt, the crowd will be swaying and singing “that’s a woman’s worth.”

    All the best!

Anonymous, I really don’t get you. How many songs about men has there been over the years? Many. For the continuous improvement and sustainable development of women in society they must be reminded that they are of “worth”. Determinants of this fact are always hindering this actualization. A women who has a high self-efficacy significantly improves family life and more specifically the lives and health outcomes of her children.

Tarsha highlighted the achievements of women, you are showing women what it takes to develop their self worth. Some women still have not gotten the message even after Tarsha and Singing Sandra.

I am gonna be the spoiler here … as a calypso fan I was not awed by this song.

A recycled subject which will be treated harshly by the judges .. some elements of the lyrical arrangment seem wanting.

Given the standard of our calypso over the years it falls short of King Maker ;)

    • ROSEAU VALLEY
      January 5, 2013

Same here. Indeed, this a great song and well presented but does it mean that for a woman to be successful in the Calypso arena she has o sing about women? It happens not only in Dominica .. We remember Calypso Rose for her famous rendition for her song ..I go keep my honey ..they can keep their money .. I ‘ll keep my dignity although she had many other hits.

The women calypsonians need to broader their scope of subject beyond this narrow feminist agenda. There are so many issues in society to be addressed.

Perhaps a song on the abuse of women by Politicians would do well. A song about a Minister’s hug for jobs would be timely and help shed light on the plight of women in Dominica.

Even the Speaker could help write a song about women in parliament or Rape in he bedroom.

In that regard, I had the same concerns with Tarsha P and would not have given her the crown on that basis, even thought I think she was fantastic. I just think that these songs lack originality of theme. Hence my prediction that this one will not make it to the finals.

      Respectfully
      Roseau Valley

      • Aye Dominique
        January 5, 2013

I really wish I could give you more thumbs up, unfortunately DNO say one per IP address.

I just think that there are more pressing issues surrounding women in Dominica…..”a minister hug for a job” would be very timely and relevant for the current disrespect that women currently face in Dominica. The only degree that makes sense in DA is the one that gives you the strength to spread your legs apart to a malboowoo for a job. Yeah this is how a woman’s worth is validated in Dominica.

I think the songs are beginning to sound very monotonous. She has a great voice but melody in some areas were lacking and the sound is lyrically weak.

All that said, I am a true calyps lover and so I welcome Elektra. I love the art form, love to hear songs on topical issues, very rich in lyrics…have not heard too many of the calypsos this year….hope DNO continues to give us a little bite like this weekly, for persons like me who are just too busy to tune in to listen on a continuous basis.

ROSEAU VALLEY…I admire your opinions on all things political(local) but you are entirely off on this one wi. There Can Neva Be too Many Songs about ‘The fruit of Life – Women or ‘The Woman’. You and I know there’s going to be so many, too many songs on politics and politicians. Pat alone will write half a dozen, and that’s probably six artists.

So they, the Judges, are better off making allowance for the ‘Woman Song’ aspect of these competitions, even if it means ringing in a new era; we will be better served and it’s not feminist. This song sounds fresh and nice.

You are not only off base on the need for women to sing about thier upliftment .. The Calypsonian you referenced was Singing Sandy .. not Calypso Rose (who came much earlier). This topic is never stale in an institutionally sexist society like ours. On the contrary I wouldn’t mind hearing a few songs encouraging the uplift of our young men out of the gangsterism they seem to be sinking into.

      • shocked
        January 7, 2013

Just a correction it was Singing Sandra not Calypso Rose. Electra that song is not a wow. The message lack coherence and your evidence to speak about a woman’s worth is not convincing.

I see you and your husband thinks foreign is better but there are much better writers in Dominica that could give you a song which is far better than this one.

Your vocal tone is good but you need some voice training badly. Sometimes you come across as screaming and i was at Stardom on Saturday nite and you definitely lack clarity. There were many lines you sang and the audience did not hear what you said.

This song will take you to the semi finals but not the finals. It is an ordinary run of the mill woman song that is not adding nothing new to the annals of songs sang about women.

I am not hater i love your stage presence, you are a pleasant person who has what it takes to do like Tasha P and win the monarchy but you need a crown song not a mediocre song.

Daddy Milla has a good composition but his voice is pathetic. He sings very flat. I heard the big controversy about Daddy Milla and I am like what. Have anyone honestly listened to his recording? He clearly he needs serious voice training. He is no Beno. Although he has a better song than Beno, Beno will beat him hands up when it comes to rendition.
