First ever Bridal and Events Fair

The first annual Bridal and Events Fair aimed at promoting Dominica as a unique destination wedding location will be held in Dominica next week.

Caribbean Exquisites, Nature Island Weddings and Dreamy Weddings have organized the event carded for Sunday 5th August, 2012 at the Old Mill Cultural Center from 3:00pm to 10:00 pm.

More than 40 businesses including wedding and events planners, caterers, photographers, gift stores, hair stylists, taxi companies and musical bands are expected to collaborate to make wedding and events planning in the Nature Island of Dominica easier for both nationals and non-nationals.

Couples will be able to combine the best of an adventurous honeymoon with a more non-traditional ceremony at an affordable cost.

In addition, the organizers envisage that the fair will allow businesses to gain increased exposure, and create a database of potential customers.

The event will also allow wedding and event service providers the opportunity to network with each other while showcasing their products and services in a creative manner by offering special packages to include complimentary products, discounts, coupons and samples to the general public.

An additional feature of the event will be the Bridal and Event Fashion extravaganza where various bridal and events attire, hairstyles, make-up and nail designs will be displayed.

The fair will be streamed live by both local and foreign media and admission is free.

Please that because of the weather, the venue for the Bridal and Events Fair has been changed to Shed 12 at the Canefield Industrial estate.

As long as its owned by my people, made by people and for my people and the rest of the world, then i’m all for it. Honestly i’m not heavy on outsiders coming in using our resources. I feel a way about it, any other patriot of any country would say the same for where they’re from. I rather see my people trying ‘a ting’ with what we have, before somebody else does.

I totally support it. This can be a great occurrence for generations thereafter to elaborate within their creative imaginations. I think its a great idea and am loving it. Yeah it cost money but at least its a positive way to reel it in. This could lead to greater and better things for us Dominicans world wide, but most especially those at home. “I Can Dig It Loud & Clear!”

i doh support yhat move at all. dominican catholic must protest against this. Everything is money making,,,no workshop or seminars on marriage orals, couselling. crisis management, management of resources etc etc I really is disappointed that our governement went ahead with this withought consulting the churches. July 26, 2012

@ NEWTOWNschool and what does that have to do with Catholic church or any religion in particular? If you want counseling why don’t you seek it out on your own? This is an event for BUSINESS people to come together and learn how to manage and market ideal resources for dream wedding packages!! When people pay their hard money for destination weddings 99% of the time RELIGION is left out of it. Is Catholicism the only religion in Dominica?

Go and protest, cruise ship numbers already down and tell people they can’t buy wedding packages of their likings if catholic church not involved?

What church have to do with people making a living.

And you have to be a stupid person to think government can tell people where and how +what kind of wedding they can or cannot have.

Why aren’t some of the block heads here figuring out that you can go to church then use the events venue for your reception like is done normally. like we exchange vows in church then drink rum in parish hall after?…. maybe get divorced 6 months later.
    oh please?!!

THis is yet another ploy by the Dominica Labour Party to undermine the work of the catholic EE and ME i.e engagement encounter and marriage encounter respectively. Its an outright shame and thats why that there are some karbinet members who have been known to ( i cannot say this ) on their wives nose ( masa d sar ). What is our sweet Da comining to ? WE as catholocs have to stand up aginst this move by skerro and dem to immorlaise us …am fully disturbed and our people are just accepting anything .

RISE UP AGINST THIS MY PEOPLE!

u=huh? :-| what does this have to do with the price of cheese?? I don’t see any part of this article that goes against the catholic church and its values, nor does this have anything to do with politics…smh. It’s just an opportunity giving nationals and foreigners options as to how they want to celebrate their weddings, plan receptions, dress up their bridal parties etc. Personally i think it’s brilliant. Instead of importing from David’s Bridal we can give our local businesses a chance to grow while creating employment and boosting our economy. Learn to support local instead of trying to shoot down everything our people try to establish!! sakway gas!!

      July 27, 2012

We need to seriously educate ourselves people. What does this fair have to do with the price of cheese indeed…smdh!!! If you’re Catholic, nothing wrong in having a Catholic priest marry you at the venue of your choice…Again, EDUCATE YOURSELVES people and become modernized in a good way. This event has NOTHING to do with immoral acts or the Labour Party or any other sorts. GET REAL!!!!!!!!!!!

  9. NATASHA IS RIGHT ?
    July 26, 2012

I AM IN FULL SUPPORT OF WHAT NATASHA had to say. Some of you people believe that SKERRO is some freaking God. Will there be any effort aimed at preventing same sex couples from getting married in Da? What about prootional materials…..will these leaflets and brochures contain information which runs against our christian/catholic principles. The government of SKERRIT must stop making fun of people’s emotions. Marriage is instituted by GOd !!!!!!!

    July 26, 2012

I am very much disinterested in this > Wedding ceremony is ordained by God and its for the church in a church and I as a catholic believe IN Godly things and Trust me I cannot believe how Skerrit doing that to us. This Government must FALL. First it was gay tourism, then same sex marriage now this.

    • True D/can
      July 26, 2012

@NATASHA IN DAT – Do not be foolish! Skerrit didn’t do anything. The laws already made provision for out-of-church marriages. The Act was simply amended to streamline the process and allow for same day marriages. You people make me sick!! It’s people like you that keep the country behind. Stop blaming the Goverment!

        July 26, 2012

Some of all you so called trained people have no respect for your marital vows and continue to flirt with the ” top gowns”. I recognise our depression and disappointments and need for some kind of propriety. BUT let the truth be told. Why obeah why bannis why vooodoo why must we go and garday lol…..God is on our side those kind of western culture which the DLP Government is introducing in dominica will only further mess up our youths…..STOP THE IMMORALITY and stop calling people foolish.

Interesting that you should make such a comment. Are you forgetting the numerous “same sex” scandals Catholic priests are involved in and instead the Church punishes them they transfer them to other churches or countries to continue hurting unsuspecting boys and families???! Give me a break. Are these some of the Godly things you believe in?

I am a Catholic too, however if this will boost the economy of the country, I am all for it. You need to realize dear that the world is not only about our religion and beliefs and people have different views about certain things and my personal view is that if its against your religion then you just don’t involve yourself in it cause it is your personal view.

NATASHA has made her point and it seems to be pricking alot of you all. people just think that its only their opinions that count because they supporting an illegal government and dlp which continue to manipulate every dan event on island. Who is really behing this thing ? where is the proceeds going to ? which lawyers are behind this ? where did this come from? did this people provide all of the documentations to the authorities? was the catholic church and other churches , dominica cgristian council and dominica evangelical association consulted on this matter ?

I feel so shocked over all of this

I agree with you. They more interested in the wedding than the marriage why so many marriages will continue to fail. Instead of concentrating on the religious aspect, they more concerned about taking pictures, and impressing guests. Whats wrong why they cannot marry in a church, and take their reception outside. one interested because it will bring money to the country?? everything is about money, money and more money. too many fools to realise money is the root of all evil – and if not all almost all.

      • .
        July 26, 2012

regardless of where someone gets married dont they need some kind of organization to make sure that everything flows smoothly? be iuin in the church or outside? why cant some people just see the good in something.. always negative..people crying Dominca dont have jobs/revenue and government not doing anything to create it. something like that come along people like you bashing it..

Being in the industry myself thats a very WELCOMING initiative.

  17. Tourism Consultant
    July 25, 2012

very interesting initiative… adding value to our tourism sector… the wedding and honeymoon market is huge, and Dominica will certainly benefit if it is done right. delivery of quality, consistent and competitive service and the proper and effective marketing and ackaging of the products and services will auagur well for us as a wedding and honeymoon destination,

…and the sights… Cana Heritage Site in Capuchin, Cold Soufriere near Penville, Cabrits National Park and Fort Shirley, Indian River, Secret Beach, Red Rocks at Calibishie, Pagua Bay, Turtle Bay at Woodfordhill, Thibaud Bay, Carib Territory/Barana Aute???, Castle Bruce, Rosalie Bay, Emerald Pool, Rain Forest Arial Tram, Middle Ham Falls, Boiling Lake, Mero Beach ( do you remember the tag line “MERO IS FOR LOVERS”, Soufriere Sulfur Springs, Botanical Gardens, Trafalgar Falls, and the list can go on and on…can you people add to the list. Dominica is indeed a nature paradise, how we market it will determine how much we benefit… Today’s travellers and vacationers demand alot and we have to ensure that we can deliver… DOMINICA… The Natural Island for Weddings, Dominica … Naturally Romantic, Dominica… where Lovers Unite.

The flip side, poor air access, lack of suuficient honeymooon suites… what do we do to make up for this… SERVICE, SERVICE, SERVICE… make the people feel welcome, at home, safe, secure, let them have things to do, give them many options or the right to choose nothing at all… and we will see the difference…

 wish you all success with this initiative

    July 25, 2012

Hi fellow Dominicans, I know you love to let your family or close friend organize your wedding for you, but we event planners need you to turn out to this event and really utilize our service. Come out and you won’t miss my booth. It will stand out and show you a small sample of what I can offer you. Thank you

    • Peacock
      July 26, 2012

I think this is a good idea to show case to the public what we have to offer in terms of creativity. But I must add that I worked with some event planners from Giraudel/Eggleston for my wedding and they were fabulous. My only and biggest disappointment was with the photgrapher. We need to alot better in terms of photography, marketing, arranging packages, and giving value for money. If you cannot get a photo cleaned, then you should not market yourself as a photographer for events. I wish I could attend. AGain, great initiative.

The next initiative is for the Govt to reduce the number of days it takes to obtain a marriage licence and make it more visitor friendly. Too much up and down .. go there .. sign there… go upstairs, go ministry, too much tala. I know of countries/islands in the Caribbean the marriage licence can be obtained in one day. This is what you call making your destination a wedding destination. We need to improve on these aspects if we are to go forward.

      • Event Planner
        July 26, 2012

@Peacock– sorry about your situation with obtaining a good photographer, but I can assure, that won’t be the case with me- quality will be delivered. As in relation to the marriage licence issue, that is a very valid point and I will see how i can address this to the govt or licencing officials. I pray something can be done about this. As a recent bride, you can voice your issue to the govt as well ( give it a try). Thank you.
