A number of fringe events are expected to be staged in the run-up to this year’s edition of the Jazz ‘n Creole Festival.

Events will be held at Anchorage Hotel, Riverstone Bar and Grill, Rosalie Bay Resort, Atlantic View Resort, Evergreen Hotel, Fort Young Hotel and The Champs.

On Wednesday, Sharma Hilaire, a representative of Anchorage Hotel, promised an exciting night of activities, on Thursday, May 12, from 7:00 pm to 12:00am.

“On the line-up we have Elijah Benoit. We also have NJ30, from Barbados, and we also have some poetry and drumming on that evening as well. The entrance is $30 per person, and we will have our buffet dinner as well on that evening. It’s going to be EC$50 for the buffet dinner, and we’re going to have drink and cocktail specials as well,” she said.

In addition, there will be a VIP boat cruise to end the night.

“One of the highlights for the evening is going to be our VIP part of the session. And, for the VIP, we are offering a boat cruise after the event, where persons get to meet and mingle with the artists. So, that is going to be from 12:00 am to 1:00 am,” Hilaire stated. “VIP passes are EC$100 per person.”

Maxine Alleyne-Esprit, of Riverstone Bar and Grill, in Belles, advertised jazzy performances by Dominican musicians, on Saturday, May 14, from 2:30 pm.

“As usual, we will be featuring two performances that distinctly carry both the Jazz and the Creole element,” she divulged. “So, this year, we will have on stage, at Riverside Jazz ‘n Creole, Michele Henderson, doing her Jazz set, which is something that she does not get to do very often, here in Dominica… Michele and her band should be on from about 3/3:30pm… And then we have Ecstasy Band.”

Manager of first-time fringe partner, recently opened Rainbow Rentals, Michael Bunche, remarked that patrons would benefit from 15 percent off on any rentals picked up between May 8 and May 17. Also, wristbands given at main event will allow customers to obtain 15 percent discount on rentals, up to July 31, 2016.

The fringe events span from Sunday, May 8 to Saturday, May 14, as follows:
-Sunday, May 8- Poolside Jazz, at Rosalie Bay Resort
-Evening Soca and Jazz on the rooftop, at Atlantic View Resort
-Wednesday, May 11- Pan and Jazz Soiree, at the Evergreen Hotel
-Thursday, May 12- Word, Sound and Power (Jazz ‘n Creole Edition), at the Anchorage Hotel
-Friday, May 13- Fort Young Hotel
-Saturday, May 14- Riverside Jazz ‘n Creole, at Riverstone Bar and Grill
-Evening jazz, at The Champs
-Jazz ‘n Creole warm-up/last lap, at Memory Lane

Meantime, Discover Dominica Authority (DDA) Marketing Executive, Monique Jacob, revealed that this year’s festival will be followed by an after-party, at Prince Rupert’s Tavern.

“After we finish up top, you can come back down and have some more Jazz, and music,” Jacob said.

The Jazz ‘n Creole Festival is to be held at the Cabrits National Park in Portsmouth on Sunday, May 15.

For a small island where it has been said that things are tight there are so many activities, almost one after the other (Creole festival & fringe activities; Carnival & fringe activities, Jazz & Creole and fringe activities, DOMFESTA & fringe activities, A taste of DA coming soon and the list just seems to go on and on…) at somewhat high prices per activity. I would think that there is good patronage and some profitability to all these activities. Perhaps things are not as dire as it appears :-? .

The intention of all these activities is to make the destination more attractive so that there will be more visitation to Dominica.

From my experience, there has definitely been an increase in regional travel into Dominica based on the Jazz n Creole festival and related events, and we hope that will increase even more. The island is small, and our population is small, so we need to find ways to entice and excite more travellers about coming to Dominica. It’s a holiday weekend in several of the islands including the French territories and St. Maarten, and with the new EXPRESS des ISLES schedules and prices, its a great time to come!!
