Local artiste goes international

Kayyo
Kayyo

Local artiste Jordan “Kayyo” George has appeared in an opening act for international rap artiste, Meek Mill, at a concert last Friday in Minnesota.

This as the young Castle Bruce born tries to make a name for himself on the international music and entertainment scene.

George has been making musical strides locally by performing at various events and releasing mix tapes.

He told DNO that performing at the Meek Mill’s concert  was an opportunity like no other.

“At first my nerves were acting up just before taking the stage however after getting on, it just felt natural…never felt like that before,” he indicated.

George, who recently released a video for his song “Get to Know You,” added that his main priority is getting Dominica on the map and that his main goal is for his music and talent to be recognised for what it is worth.

According to him, persistence and his love for music are the main reasons for the concert appearance.

“This opportunity means everything to me I never dreamed something like that would ever happened so I am forever grateful,” he added.

He advised upcoming artistes, like himself, to keep on persevering and never stop doing what they love.

When asked about his plans for the future Kayyo remarked, “I want to continue making music, making music I love that people will love. I want to be heard on an international level…that’s the goal.”

See video below of performance at the concert.

I just watched the video and it was good to see one of our boys doing the opening act. Raise the FLAG, Kayyo. You are getting there. DO NOT CHANGE ANYTHING TO PLEASE ANYONE, BE YOURSELF. You will be recognized, in time. Also, do not let fame get into your head. Do what you do best, SING, and everything else will follow.

He’s not the 1st Dominicans to open up for a platinum selling artist.. I’m just saying.. He still got A LONG WAY to go or he can pull a Trinidad James n come out with a catchy tune.

All the negative comments.. I can honestly tell you he is not that bad.. There are worst. I just saw one today with some guy rapping n then a spanish guy n some dancehall flow over a down south beat.. It was horrible I cant remember the artist name but vids like that embarrass not only them self but the island lol.. This dude however got some skills. If he keep at it it will work out man..His accent still strong in his flow unless he trying do it str8 southern or just stick to your Dominican accent.

Apart from good luck my boy. Keep doing you

    • March 13, 2013

Accent do not matter. He should not drop his accent to promote another. I have lived in the US for 32 years and I still have my accent. I am Dominican. The people love my accent, why should I give it up? Rihanna did it for Barbados, she holds her accent. Kayyo will do it too.

      • Anonymous
        March 14, 2013

Lol I said either he drops the fake American accent to go 100% Dominican or go 100% southern accent.. Constructive criticism.. and if y’all don’t like my comment boohoo there are atleast 8 Dominicans I know born and raised that opened up for big acts. There’s this young girl from Portsmouth that’s already signed just not put out due to major record conflicts with her image they want her to change to “fit in” for Kay This is just a stepping stone In the right direction. Keep ya head up n be authentic don’t be what u see on tv

      • Lol y'all funnie
        March 14, 2013

Read! I said either he changes his fake accent too 100% American or keep it original with Dominica.. His west Indian accent it still faking In his flow.. Ain’t my cup of tea..lol it’s constructive criticism.. I know at least 8 Dominicans who opened for major acts. One of them from possie.. She’s even signed but the label wants her to change her look to “fit in” so that’s conflicting her album drop.. Kay heading in the right direction he won some opening act to open for millz use that to network n grow.. Keep ya head up

It is sad to see some of the comments you people are posting up on here. Kayyo congratz. Don’t let what these people are saying disappoint or deter you from doing ur best. Why don’t these same blah blah mouths put something together to get artists out there? Build a studio let them record for free, do concerts, invite international artists and managers to sign them!!!!! Until you can do that, shut up and let the young man move!!!! You will get there. Now they know you and where ure from don’t they?? Some of these people speaking didn’t even know you before they saw this article. Yal need to zip it

  28. March 12, 2013

Why is it that Dominicans cant support DOMINICANS when they’re making progress? What is there to hate on if Kayyo goes international? Stupes people go get a job (lol) but Congrats Kayyo, now you hating could go find something to occupy yourself with! LmaooooO

Pants below the ankles with a belt in you waist and the profanity, It’s a genius way too portray your country. I guess taking the college route is to hard? If it was something like making it big in sports, or some brilliant invention I wouldn’t mind… but this is a joke. Black people will never lose that slave mentality all rappers do is feed off the poor and help them keep poor while they rise.

Jordan, my advice to you is this: forget about getting Dominica on the map for now. Get yourself recognized for your talent. After you become famous (if it happens), then we will get all kinds of attention that you never imagined. Let your music do the talking. You will not succeed in getting Dominica recognized on any map until they first recognize YOU.

    • Suki

  34. Focus
    March 12, 2013

I love this! This is one step further for Kayyo and Dominica. He let people know where he was from and what his flag looks like. That’s what we need to go forward. We need more people who are not afraid to say that they are from a small island in the Caribbean…. WE ARE SMALL BUT SIGNIFICANT!!! Blessings to you Kayyo… great performance! :)

With all due respect it really matters not what you think or whether or not u r impressed. At least this is a young man doing something good with himself instead of sitting on a street corner getting high. If u r so unimpressed u should try making music that impressed u, it might make headlines in your shower! Keep doing what you do Kayyo

    March 12, 2013

LOL! I laughing with “Me” about his comment about artists putting Dominica on dee map, as if other Artists have not done that already. I feel you on dat one dere oui! How soon we forget the labor of so many, who should be celebrated. But when, at home there is not even a proper music industry that celebrates accomplishments, then how do the new generation of Dominicans know from where their roots were planted?

Perhaps the article should read “putting Dominica on the Hip-Hop map”…but then again, there are other Dominican rappers out there not getting props…. and usually because they are now based overseas….one that comes to mind – Young Spray (twitter: @Young_Spray, http://realerthanmost.com, Youtube: http://www.youtube.com/user/youngsprayRTM). Based in the UK. He was one of the first to help start up the UK Rap scene. He is from Canefield and Mahaut. sorry but they haven’t… if they did at least people wouldn’t be mistaking dominica and dominican republic…. u think if rihanna was from d/ca… we’d still have that problem presently???

pull a random person in times square N.Y and ask them, if they know dominica…. they’ll say yeah.. i’ve been to santo domingo.. had a good time at the brothels… the mami’s are nice to lol….

now ask them if they’ve been to barbados, they’ll say no i haven’t been there, but rihanna from barbados… lol…. only the french antilles know dominica for the arts/music… nowhere else appreciates or knows our music… even Kes and the band perform on Fox News, ay lass not even an interview W.C.K can get from all the years they’ve been around….

I wander if a country have to be on d map a hundred trillion times what a map dat going to be chupes

however the artist seem to have some great talent but two valid crticisms why is it that Jamaicans only sound like Jamaicans and our da artists always want to mimic the Jamaican accent? let’s not start this here, u should of let my comment move… but since u wanna be a ‘smarty pants’ let’s get it popping… first and foremost ‘would have or would of’ doesn’t count…. it’s not part of his present reality… what’s part of his present reality is that 365 MMP helped him build a catalog…. if you say u hot and this and that… where’s your vids at nikkuh???

well kayyo can point to a bunch of vids and thousands of views compliments of 365 MMP…. So i’ll leave it there for now, cause i don’t eat under 365 MMP… they don’t know me and i’m not trying to befriend them… but we must learn to be appreciative and objective… i think Kayyo agrees with me…
