Mothers pageant contestants urged to remain focused on proper upbringing of their children

Eight mothers who will compete in the 2014 Carnival Mothers Queen Show, have been challenged, “despite the age of technology and the glitter and glamour”, to remain focused on ensuring that their offspring receive a proper upbringing.

The eight contestants, who were launched, include Tarickh Joseph aged 24, of Canefeild, Terrisa Bruno also 24, of Fond Cole, Cecilia Winnie Henderson 21, of Riviere Cyrique, Vanesa Louisy 20, of Pointe Mitchel and 32 year-old Ezra George of Bath Estate.

The other four are Heather Vidal aged 38, representing Portsmouth, Jasmine Joseph aged 19, of Mahaut and Patricia Charles 25, of Grand Bay.

“In this day in the planet, being a mother is not an easy road to take,” Events Coordinator at the Dominica Festivals Committee, Nathalie Clarke, told the contestants at launch event at the Old Mill Cultural Center on Saturday. “Because there are many things out there, the main one being the internet…there are so many things challenging our children as they grow up; there are so many things challenging you as you as you walk in your role as mom, that I would like to challenge you that you nurture your daughter or son,” she advised.

“Don’t be phased by the glitz and glamour and all the material things that this big old planet has, that takes us away from the fundamental things that we need to teach our children,” the DFC official stated.

Clarke also urged the contestants to teach their children the art of debating peacefully, to have an opinion, to be able to love and to play peacefully, to be helpful and also importantly, she pointed out, to be able to compete with a smiling face and still shake hands at the end of the day.

She cautioned the young ladies to aspire to be on time as a few of the contestants were late and others extremely late, in some cases.

Two of the participants have so far received sponsorship. They are Cecilia Henderson, who is sponsored by Jolly’s Pharmacy and Patricia Charles, whose sponsor is Diamond Girls and Diamond Girls Forever.

The Mothers Queen Contest is carded for February 22, 2014, at the Arawak House of Culture.

It’s interesting to see the things ppl say and do under false names. Culver lawrence and Hannah Matthew, stop hating. without a dime and penny from Culver Lawrance she is taking excellent care of her son.

The idea of having a mothers pageant isn’t bad but in my opinion this show should cater for women thirty years and older. When u have 19 and 20 year old included one have to wonder how old were they when the the got impregnated. Is being a mother so young a good example portrayed?

Alot of young mothers this year. I’m not sure if that’s a good or bad thing. Should I take it as we young people not taking our time or we young people are stepping up and being responsible. What ya’ll think?

i wish i could have thumb u down three times. You are obviously not a mother to make such a foolish statement. a mother of 1 is no less of a mother than a mother of 9.

All these pageants – we need more shows to encourage youths to be innovative and creative … to many fashion/modelling/self focus!

No disrespect intended : but aren’t these mothers rather young? Is the marginal requirement for entry ‘must have a baby’? if that’s all then you’all need a few more requirements and pronto.

These types of shows should not only be shows which are geared towards education but also should hold some sort of prestige.
