A group of seven men will go in search of the Mr. Dominica title next month, in a show that’s making its debut in the 2012 carnival celebration.
In introducing the participants on Thursday night, coordinator of the event Antoinette Mora said the Mr. Dominica competition comes at a time when violent crime among males is at its highest.
The seven who will be competing are Shanna Robin of Marigot, Gandy Robin and Augustus Bruno of Fond Cole, Kester Edwards of Goodwill, Brian Sanderson of Wesley and Nigel Peters and Lennard Panthier of Portsmouth.
Their bid for the title will see them appearing in magnificent wear, beach wear, and formal wear.
The seven are also expected to master the talent and formal interview segments as they attempt to grab the Mr Dominica crown.
The Dominica Festivals Committee (DFC) has welcomed the event as one that recognizes the potential of men.
“The women, the girls are always the one that the parents push, you have to get an education, you have to present yourself this way,” said DFC Events Director, Nathalie Clarke Meade.
“How many times do we actually hear that being said of a boy who is to become a man… who is to take up his rightful position as a King,” she emphasized.
The Mr. Dominica contest, scheduled for 10 February, is an initiative of DA Young Stars.
The event targets young adult males between 18 and 30.

I totally agree with you as this makes it more inclusive and all round representative of the island from (north – south, East – west).
As it’s the first year I am sure the organizers will be more than happy to try implementing that suggestion as it would make it so poignant.
Perhaps the Miss Dominica organizers will also learn from this valid suggestion and implement for subsequent pageants by having a representative from all (10) ten parishes.

Dominicans cry everyday our young men are in the background, or criminals, when they step up we discredit them and humiliate them before they even say boo. i am in full support of this statement…. i think men should realise our roles… we live in a society where strong black men are lacking… but this don’t begin in adult life… rather teenage years.. most boys are raised by mothers.. no father figure to teach us/them about being a man… not fully prepared for responsibility and then get improper training from negative friends and society at large… in an effort to bring out the best in men… it would be advised that they had started this in the teens age… i am also afraid that the ‘gays’ in society will use this to springboard there ideals and influence… hence destroying the purpose of such a show… a strong black man can never be feminine… our black women deserve strong black men and if this is the purpose of the show then it is good…. but something telling me the ones who are out to push for gay rights will use this whether in a year or two… to drive their initiative…
