Controversy has hit the new Mr Dominica competition even as organizers were attempting to get that first time event off the ground this week to make it part of the 2012 carnival celebrations.
One of the young men who was contracted to participate in that February 10 pageant is claiming that he was informed on Thursday that he had been disqualified for failure to submit his Police Record on time.
Junior Hypolite Thomas of Loubiere told Dominica News Online that he received a message from the event organizer informing him that he could no longer be a contestant because he did not submit that document.
“I have my police record. I had it long before the stipulated deadline but one of the members of my committee misplaced it. When we realized that, I went back to the police station last week to apply for
another one,” he explained.
Thomas said the police were helpful, but that the officer who was responsible for signing it was not there at the time.
“I finally got the police record on Thursday, the same day of the official launching of the activity. I had already signed my contract and I was one of the first individuals to sign up for that pageant. I can also take credit for persuading several other male contenders to sign up as well,” he told DNO..
Thomas says not only is he very disappointed by the way the organizers have treated him, but he says he spent money and put a lot of time into getting ready for the pageant.
“I put my team together, my chaperone too was hired, I made my costume, my swimwear is ready and to tell me at last minute I cannot participate because I brought in a police record late is fishy”, the aspiring Mr Dominica said.
Thomas is of the view that the real decision could be as a result of several factors.
“I think it’s a personal attack against me. It is not about a police record. It has much more to it. One of the male members of the committee and I have a personal matter and I believe that I am being victimized for that,” the young man alleged.
He wasn’t one of the seven selected at Thursday evening’s launch.
It seems like gay people have no rights to even breathe in this country. Why are we so small in our minds? This young guy is a citizen of the country just like us an is willing to come forward and make a contribution to our culture. Gay, happy or sad we should learn to respect one another. Some of the nicest people I know are gay. I think that we must not put everyone who is involved in same sex activity as gay. Some of those people have girlfriend(s, wives and children too! We live in a world which among us include the gays and the MSM (Men Sexing Men).There are the gays, the straight and the bisexuals among being doctors, lawyers, teachers, chefs, hairdressers etc. they are the daughters and sons of someone. There should be nothing against these people except if they are child molesters, murderers, drug pushers or are engaged in any other criminal activity. Seems like Law abiding citizens are not given respect in this country but those who constantly break the law we compare to saints!
Junior would have rocked the crowd if he had given the chance. I know he is capable of that. I just hope that this will not discourage him to grasp another opportunity to represent his country whether here or abroad.
I beg you my people, for a minute let us take the time to consider other people’s feelings before casting stones at them. After all…each and everyone of us have sins. Some bigger and in more abundance than others.

“personal matter” and “victimized” in one sentence is fishy. I’m not to sure… but it sounds like you all are/were involved.
I knew that my people, (Dominicans) are some of the most ignorant, prejudice, judgemental, small-minded, primitive/backward views, homophobic, disturbingly hateful people on the face of this earth and have always been, but it took this poor guys to volunteer for a show to prove me right.
It really saddens me and I feel so sorry for all those with venormous hatred in their hearts towards fellow citizens who have done them no wrong, but for their participation in the ‘Mr Dominica Pageant’ or for taking a photo next to flowers.
What a whole load of the brown stuff and that shows just how little strides have been made regarding people’s mentality towards different cocepts on an intellectual level, which is always a ‘red flag’ of a people not evolving for the better and their failure to recognise the importance of respecting people regardless what your views are about them.
What is the huge deal about men participating in a pageant to be fair Dominica is really lagging behind regarding such pageants, as a large number of countries and some islands in the region have an annual event, and choose a delegate for the ‘Mr World’ pageant.
‘Youtube’ this and you’ll see what I and so many others are talking about which gives one very detailed outlook on such pageants.
In a lot of countries this is a route towards gaining sponsorship for attending univesity or embarking on other ambitions, there if done properly there are numerous pluses to gained for the participants,
Some of the competitions are in fitness/exercise, public speaking, talent, challenge programmes and charitable aspirations or on going ventures.
I hope that a large number of people go out to support these men, bearing in mind as some have intimated, they are participating in an event to boost their island’s carnival programme and not going around robbing/mugging people, raping people, killing themselves or others or selling and abusing drugs in their neighbourhoods.
Whatever your opinions on pageants do give them a chance and open your minds a bit to new possibilities and attempt in this new year ‘2012’ to refrain from being so quick to be ‘negatively judgemental’.
Such a show has been a long time coming in DA and I say three cheers to the organisers as that is an excellent idea, and too often the females get to showcase their talents and are encouraged to soar to new heights in our society, while on the other hand, our girls are pushed and guided to succeed and reach for the stars, hence the evidence of total and systematic lack of encouragement for our ‘boys’ and ‘young men’.
Perhaps a similar pageant could be introduced to include the young teenage boys, as they too so need to be recognised and encouraged in our society, not left out or ignored.

I honestly don’t see any reason for animosity where male pageants are concerned…. The mere fact that some people remain so hypocritical in this era when it comes to sexuality and the fact that just because a guy decides to participate in a pageant it dims his sexual preference is utter ignorance.

As a christian state i think that me must live up to what that means, we can’t be swayed by those larger countries in adapting their pagan ways. In no way we as dominicans should take any steps in promoting, harboring or supporting sodomy, and thats exactly what we are doing by promoting this show. i propose a body building show, give our women something to get excited about. There is a constant deterioration of or moral values in dominica and as dominicans we need to address this matter with urgency, we can’t sit by and allow this abomination to infiltrate the minds of our children. remember god set fire to Sodom and Gomorrah and turned Lot’s wife into a pillar of salt just for looking back and showing compassion
Don’t even bring “Christianity” into this as we only have to take a look around the globe to see the cause of so many of our problems…. RELIGION and people trying to shove their ideologies down other people’s throats and once they disagree, they are done away with.
If your christian teachings taught you anything it is forgiveness and to none-judgmental behavior. Shame most of us don’t practice what we preach and have selected views on certain matters and others we sit quiet, death and dumb.
In stead of you all wasting your time talking about a little “pageant for men” in DA, focus on bringing those “child abusers” “pedophiles”, “rapist”, “wife/husband” beaters, “pimps” “drug dealers” and “parents” who prostitute and sell/loan their sons/daughters to certain big shots in our society without beating an eye lid, to court and charged.
These are the sorts of issues and social ills that Dominicans need to get their panties/briefs in a twist for and raise hell, holding the culprits accountable as opposed such trial sensational stories such as this article instead of pretending to be death, dumb and blind.

Really and truly, whatever people think of Junior, if his police record was submitted on time, one has no right to discriminate him. Also, since when our culture is so particular about being late? Please! The queen protestants have under a month to prepare and they are struggling to get sponsors. If it is clear that Junior was discriminated against, it is absolutely appalling and absurd and I condemn this practice.
Secondly, I believe that Mr. Dominica is a brilliant idea. Is there a talent round? If not, it would baffle me that a “swim wear” round exists yet a talent round doesn’t. Additionally, I hope that these young men are tested on their ability to answer questions on diverse topics.
Thirdly, even if I do not believe in discriminating others; I hope that Mr. Dominica does not become a “gay” show or is taken control from “gay” elements. This would send the wrong message to your youths in that it is okay to indulge in homosexual practices. Our colonial masters have destroyed the psyche of Afro-Caribbean people for too long. Homosexuals as well as foreign powers must respect the rule of law. If there is a need to review buggery laws then let the people and the government decide, not foreign powers.
Lastly, one needs to beg the question as to what are the criteria for one to become a candidate of the Mr. Dominica show. Also, if Mr. Hypolite felt he was discriminated against he should address this through the legal channels. We hope he receives justice if he was wronged.

That Mr Bertrand (surname withheld) held the top spot in bodybuilding in Dominica for many years up into the 1990s and captured awards locally and overseas. At his age, still in good shape, for those who know him

Ok, I have a few things to say about this story. I am a Dominican (born and raised) living in the USA. More-so I am a Born again Christian ( realize what I said Christian not Hypocrite) Now that being said I am going to share my honest take on the matter.
If I read right! It is Mr.Dominica/ not Drag/ Gay. I really see nothing wrong with talented males showcasing their talent using whatever way one chooses. I do not see how one can just conclude that it is a way for Gay to be accepted or whatever. I can argue the same about Miss Dominica as a way for Lesbians to come out and stuff. It is absolutely low and closed minded for one to even speculate something of that Nature.
This whole story SADDENS me as I am seeing Dominica seems to still be a place of judging and criticizing and oppressing it’s own. It is very shameful.
A police report? Hmm! Sound like more to it to me. They could have been given the invoice or proof that the report was filed/ requested and that a final determination would be made after the received it.
Now unto corrections: Swimwear according to Wikipedia: swimwear generally refers to the Swimsuit, apparel, equipment and accessories used in the aquatic sports of swimming, diving, synchronized swimming, triathlon and water polo. So,yes, men do wear swimwear! And, my husband is SOOOO MUCH MAN! And, he wears swimwear too ie: Speedo.

I think Junior should get a chance as he is very talented. If the organizers want men to participate in the show they should be above board and give those that are interested a fair chance. It is the first time for this type of show and so we expect the best to be brought forward. We need a response from Ms. Morra the organizer in that regard. I will be waiting. DNO be fair get the lady to explain so you can have both sides of the story.
