Junior Hart’s new Jamaican movie Hated 2 Death will hit the Island of Dominica sometime in December 2011 where it will have its Dominican premier.
This well put together movie from the Collywood stable finally breaks the old mould of Jamaican movie making, normally about gangsters and drugs and the gun culture. Junior Hart saw his movie sold out in Jamaica Black River to a massive crowd of 4,000 people.
Hated 2 Death is based on true events about the lives of three lesbians, two of whom were murdered in 2006 in Jamaica.
Junior Hart did a wonderful job in telling this story with a difference. “The approached used was different,” said Hart. “I wanted to show certain hush hush issues in Jamaican society in a way that Jamaican have never seen themselves in the movies before. Usually stories are based on the bad boy image and the gun culture and a lot of foul language in Jamaican patois, I think it’s time for a change of image”.
Hart said he want Dominicans to come out and dress up for this gala premier night to be held at the Arawak House of Culture.
Germina Jno Baptiste will be there as she is the first Dominican to play a lead role on the big screen.
Junior Hart company Collywood will be looking to promote other Dominicans to the big screen.
“Judging by the Jamaican premier night, we expect a massive turn out in Dominica, in fact it’s going to be a road block in Roseau,” said Hart. “Once tickets are released, we expect tickets to be sold off in no time, already people are contacting the Collywood website to reserve tickets, so we know this is going to be a spectacular night for the island of Dominica”.
Collywood will be giving away FREE DVD of the movie trailer leading up to the premier night. People will be able to get a free DVD and circulate it among their friends and family when the company hits the Island soon.
My friends in Jamaica sent me some feed back on Face book. I think this is really great to have movies like this finally coming out of Jamaica, the most homophobic country in the world. It’s like america nominating a black president, the most racist country in the world. I have been told that this movie deals with a number of issues facing women in general. My friends are school teachers and one lawyer…they really enjoyed the movie. They said that not a single swear word…Lol, I think Junior Hart is one of those up and coming rebel directors like Spike Lee who say it as it is. Keep up the good work you are doing our race proud.
As long as this film doesn’t demonize lesbians, I can only hope–though I’m not optimistic–the film will soften some Dominicans’ homophobic tendencies, as well as, more broadly, alert them to real problems of violence against women and violence in general. I say this, though, without knowing much about the film, so I might be way off-base. Will have to wait and see.
