New television show focuses on Dominica’s entertainment culture

A joint initiative of Image Plus and Cutting Edge Communications, public relations firms owned by Dionne Durand and Kamala Jno Baptiste-Aaron, has yielded the development of a new television show called The Buzz, aimed at focusing on Dominica’s Entertainment Culture.

The two entities are partnering with local broadcasting company Marpin 2k4 for the syndication of the new series set for its inaugural airing on Monday 5, 2011 at 7PM.  Executive Producer of the show Durand, speaking at the show’s launch yesterday, said that The Buzz will explore the multi-faceted entertainment scene in Dominica, including yearly festivals, the rich culture, fashion, music, sports and celebrities.

She said, “Dominica’s local celebrities are doing interesting work in their field and they live fascinating lives outside their day-to-day work that are not being captured. At The Buzz, we recognize that there exists a demand for regular, quality entertainment in Dominica. We feel that this new television show will help develop the entertainment industry by giving artistes, performers and entertainers outlets to promote their work while allowing viewers to tap into the vitality of Dominica’s entertainment scene. Kamala and I are committed to providing viewers with a quality program and with the support of our production partners at Marpin, we are confident that The Buzz will satisfy the very highest standard. ”

Jno Baptiste-Aaron, who will host the show and also function as Co-Executive Producer, stated that The Buzz is ready to satisfy a craving for Dominican seeing themselves entertaining and being entertained.

“Now, more than ever before, because of the wonders of the internet through social media and the medium of television we in Dominica are exposed to the lifestyles and culture of the rest of the world. Through entertainment shows, seen here in Dominica, we see the lifestyles, trends and accomplishments of entertainers in Jamaica, Barbados and Trinidad and Tobago. Through The Buzz we say let’s see the lifestyles, trends and accomplishments of Dominican entertainers and artistes. The buzz will allow us to see a reflection of ourselves and allow the rest of the world to get a glimpse of who we are,” she said.

Also throwing the weight of their respective entities behind the project were Chief Cultural Officer Raymond Lawrence, Dominica Festivals Commission (DFC) Events Director Natalie Clarke Meade and the Ministry of Tourism, represented by Chief Technical Officer in the Ministry of Tourism Danny Reid.

Reid particularly challenged the producers of The Buzz to take the show global as a means of promoting tourism while pledging the Ministry’s support for the program as a tourism marketing tool.

“I want to hear that by the end of next year, a 15-month challenge, that you’re not just Buzz-ing locally, but you’re Buzz-ing internationally, because there is a platform for you regionally but I’m also asking you in 15 months from now that you can go international and it’s up to you to see how we can have the type of relationship where we can help each other and in return help Dominica to go where it needs to go,” Reid remarked.

After its first airing the show will continue broadcast in the 7 PM time slot on Marpin’s channel 5 with  repeats the following Saturday at 6 PM and Sunday 5PM and will also be available for viewing on www.comeseetv.com.

Congratulations to all involved. Hope this new venture can work…so many others have started just to fail shortly after due to disagreements and fallouts among the parties.

Whatever you do or whoever you promote, please ensure that lyrics carry major points. Too often these days in Dominica persons rise to stardom due to unsavory and salacious lyrics which do nothing to uplift the youth.

There are so many poor messages and instructions in much of the rowdy type of music that your work is already cut out for you. I heard a song the other day about “wood them” and I was wondering what were the instructions about and to whom were they being given. Then earlier this year, I heard pre-schoolers teasing each other about having hotdogs in their mouths…

Let us ensure we are indeed promoting the good things in and about Dominica.

    All the best!

Media colleague of Bonnie, nice to see you come ad defend your sister, but you need not make a fool of yourself and put the already bankrupt Dominica in more disrepute than it alreadyis. OK!! Marpin, GIS, KAIRI’s Heng Host ??? What is that?? any red dressed person can do a job on these places, OK! Cucum could get a job there! You don’t need any qualifications to work at these establishments all you need to do, is show your RED flag, so away with that. That media pool in Dominica is a big joke! A big fat joke!

    another one again!

every year we hear of new tv and radio shows, new websites and new programmes and none get off the ground…dominicans lose interest too easily and the island’s tight advertising dolloars will not sustain it. and kamala is like salt, she in everything. i tired seeing her face… can we get some fresh faces?

      September 2, 2011

Maybe you should be the fresh face in this. Take the initiative if you are tired of seeing the same face, do something to change that.

See what I mean Admin? I gave Bonnie some good advise and you decided she should not have it!Not cool! LOL! By the ay I see they want to use the resources of the Government to compete with QTS!!!! Q95 is the pacesetter!! They can jump hi they can jump low, Q leads, they follow!

ADMIN: But we are part of the “cabal.” What you expect?

    • Nohogwash
      September 1, 2011

Well you should have given the sister, a prominent member of the cabal the opportunity to read it maybe she would see where she falls short and improve of her “Communication Consulting Services?” LOL! The advice was in good faith, you should not have deprived th sister of it!! Not nice admin, not nice!

    • Nohogwash
      September 1, 2011

Thanks Admin, I hope the sister reads the message and take the advice seriously even if it was given in jest!! It is good advice! If you call yourself a communication consultant at least you have to APPEAR to be one! At least! I don’t know about Dominica’s standards, where I come from, it is so!!!Let us start setting some high expectations from those who serve us!

A tip to the media consultant! Why don’t you ever look at people/the Camera straight in their eyes? I hope you are not advising your clients to do what you do Missy! The last time you were in the media you had a bg old Bow pinned to your dress, all the attention was directed to your big old bow and your appropriate dress and you call yourself a media consultant.. LOL!!!

    • Nohogwash
      September 1, 2011

That was supposed to be INAPPROPRIATE, Not appropriate for the occasion. Get it right Barnie, even if you are in Dominica, the world is seeing and laughing.

    • Congrats ladies
      September 1, 2011

@Nohogwash: so is de gurl fault den that the picture-takeouter may be chose the wrong time to snap….for all u know she was addressing a question at de time or her audience was not sitting in single file direct infront her! Kamala is a natural and knows her stuff, remember her queen show talent? You can hate the dog; but, by all means say it teeth white nah? Allu too extra eh.

Kamala & Dionne, I wish you ladies the best.

      • Nohogwash
        September 1, 2011

I am not blaming , I am making an observation! OK! Dominicans all you will have to learn to take criticism if you all you choose to be in the spotlight ok!!! The last time I saw Kamala making a media appearance she had a big yellow Flower (it was not a bow as I previously stated, but a flower) on a low, low cut dress that was not appropriate for the occasion; for someone who calls herself a communications/media consultant she should have been aware of that. She has to CONTROL her image! OK, She should decide what appropriate imagine that will go with whatever the event is. OK! As a media consultant whose job is to help people do these sort of things!!
