Permanent carnival venue needed – Bully

Chief Cultural Advisor and Chairman of the Carnival Development Committee Alwyn Bully has called for a permanent venue to be designated for carnival events.

Bully, who spoke at a press conference yesterday morning, said that a special site should be set aside for carnival celebrations because this move will save organizers a considerable amount of money, which could be put into other aspects of carnival.

“It’s something we have to look at very seriously. In fact we’ve had discussions with ministers of government to see if it’s possible to create a permanent site because the amount that we spend every year mounting that city and dismantling it is really like – it creates employment yes – but as far as money for carnival is concerned it’s an area of money which just has to be spent every year,” he said.

“If we had a permanent site then that money would be put into other aspects of carnival, bigger prizes, encouraging schools, workshops throughout the course of the year. All those things we haven’t been able to do due to lack of funds. So how we spend our money has to be very, very carefully considered. But the city is important to us so we’ll do it until such time that we have a permanent site,” he added.

The comment is relevant. For example also, for years the Dominica Calypso Association (DCA) has been organising Calypso competitions for decades and has to pay for the use of a venue every year. The Association did not have the foresight to establish a venue to hold its shows. Swinging Stars with 50 years plus in the music business doesn’t have a proper place to even practice much less for shows.

Strangely, and to Dominicans’ surprise, the Minister of Finance declared in Parliament recently that $1,000,000.00 would go to assist musical bands, musicians, entertainment venues and so on. Coincidentally, 50%, 1/2 of that money, $500,000.00 went to RENOVATIONS to KRAZY KOKONUTS. Who are the OWNERS? Now Krazy Kokonuts is the preferred venue these days for CALYPSO SHOWS, tents and other shows. How many musical bands or musicians or entertainment venues have received such assistance? Midnight Groovers? Swinging Stars? WCK? Fanatik band? Ophelia, the Lady of song? Was that $1,000,000.00 brought by the Minister of Finance and passed in Parliament just to FIX UP KRAZY KOKONUTS and en passant, others would get some crumbs?

Dominicans are being FOOLED AGAIN? A Permanent Venue to be designated for carnival events and other events would benefit Dominica in many respects. Apart from saving costs, the venue, if properly built and managed, could be bringing in revenue. Locals and visitors alike would be drawn to that permanent site, where costumes and everything pertaining to the different art forms could be displayed all through the year. It would be an important venue for all kinds of shows, including local arts and craft, culinary arts etc., etc., etc., The economy would benefit tremendously.

But Where there is no VISION, the PEOPLE WILL PERISH. What is taking place in our beautiful Dominica is FIX UP for the ‘BOYS.’ Hard-earned Tax Payers dollars being used to do all kinds of things. The strategy and policy of those in Power is to quickly ENRICH themselves, their friends, with People’s money, while the MAJORITY’S standard of living goes down and down. The Bread of the Few are being well buttered.

  6. PUT THE 27 MILLION INTO THAT INSTEAD
    January 27, 2011

Hopefully one day someone will realize the importance of this request and give it the attention it needs. At least Bully is persistent, it may pay of in his lifetime. Is a shame that we fail to realize the value of persons like Mr. Bully ( who is really valued and well recognized out side of Dominica) Isn’t that a shame???? But yet so typical of Dominicans.

We need to recognize the importance of our culture and the need to preserve our cultures, with the ability to portray the culture and arts in a permanent location. I mean he has all the arguments for it, what is the reasons against it, why shouldn’t we have a place that is permanent? For years we used the Old Windsor park. Wouldn’t this also ease the cost of having to erect a carival city each year and breaking it down. Put the 27 million into that instead of the statehouse that is my vote…..
