The 5th annual Titiwi Festival has been slated for 27th to 29th September, 2013 in the community of Layou and organizers are promising entertainment for the entire family.
Speaking to Dominica News Online, President of the Layou Improvement Committee, Lazare Charles, said the festival came about as part of a Tourism program which was implemented in the community in 2008.
“Under this program we received a community tourism facility and we recognized that Layou has a unique product which you can say is sort of endemic to Dominica; the titiwi,” he said. “We decided to incorporate the local attributes of Layou in the whole tourism program and as a result therefore, once a year as part of our community tourism product we have the Titiwi Festival.”
He pointed out that the Titiwi is showcased through different culinary arts, and different aspects of the community itself such as the river and beach will be highlighted.
Some of the activities for the event will include a thanksgiving service during which various people will be recognized for their contributions to the development of the community and the awarding of a Titiwi Festival Scholarship to a deserving child of Layou.
Charles indicated that despite the fact that the committee has not been able to benefit from an actual profit over the years, the community benefits every year since the festival allows the community to generate some income.
“You will find after the festival persons will be able to purchase school materials for their children. Also, some of the proceeds of the festival go toward the Titiwi Education Fund which is supported by the Parliamentary Representative and the patrons. So far, we have awarded two scholarships and this year we have broadened our scope to help the students achieve their education,” Charles said.
Introducing more sporting activities into the festival and developing the beach as a tourism product and an area where activities can be hosted year round are among plans for this year’s festival.
Charles stated that the Layou Improvement Committee is focused on bringing the community of Layou to a higher and better standard.
