Portsmouth Fish Night promises to be great

As part of its plans for registration with the Co-operative Division and to help create awareness of its existence the Saint John’s Fisher-folk Co-operative Society Study Group is organizing a Fish Night on Saturday 9th April 2011 from 3:00pm to 11:00pm.  The event will take place in front the Saint John’s Centre/CALLS Building on Bay Street in Portsmouth.

The objective of the Fish Night is to promote the eating of fish and to foster co-operation among the members of the study group.  The event is also being used as a fund raiser for the group and a percentage of the events proceeds will be donated to the Japanese Earthquake and Tsunami Relief Fund and the Centre where Adolescents Learn to Love and Serve (CALLS).

A few corporate entities are partnering with the study group to host the event and these include D-Blush Internet Café, Dominica Brewery and beverages Limited (Kubuli Beer) and LIME Dominica Ltd.

Fish dinners will be on sale at $15.00 per plate and a cash bar will be open for the sale of drinks.  Patrons will have a choice of Steamed Fish or Fried Fish which will be served with side orders of provision or rice and vegetables. Fish Broth and Fish Water will also be on sale. Arts and Crafts will be offered for sale and entertainment will include steel band and hi-fi music. The evening promises to be great and everyone is invited to come out and be part of the Fish Night.

All Dominica Brewery and Beverages products will be on sale, and, LIME will be offering some fantastic promotional deals during the fish night. Expected to be present at the Fish Night is Prime Minister, Honorable Roosevelt Skerrit, who is very pleased with the event being staged this weekend in Portsmouth.  The Study Groups hopes that Saturday’s Fish Night will be a new activity on Portsmouth’s Calendar of Activities as the group plans to undertake this event on a monthly basis.

The Saint John’s Fisher-folk Co-operative Society Study Group is being established to empower fisher-folk living and operating from Capuchin to Portsmouth/ Pointe Ronde in the Parish of Saint John to be empowered so that they can take advantage of business opportunities that are not normally available to them individually.

The group of the also recognizes the importance of promoting the sustainable use of marine resources and protecting the rich marine biodiversity of the Marine Component of the Cabrits National Park.

The group currently has a membership of fifty-one (51) fully registered members including three (3) women.  The group is being assisted by the Co-operative Division and collaborates closely with the Fisheries Division.

I wish I was home right now. I remember when Scotts Head had theirs. This was a big event until Grandbay and Scotts Head renewed their public love affair and both sides brought their guns to the courtship.

The end result was the disappearance of Fish Night in the South, never to be seen or heard from again.
