Queen show pageant not frivolous – Clarke-Meade

Clarke-Meade

Events Director at the Dominica Festival’s Commitee Nathalie Clarke-Meade has said that though some may believe that queen shows are frivolous, such competitions tend to help shape most participants into better persons.

Clarke-Meade was speaking at the official launching of 2011 queen contestant Jacintha Fagan yesterday at the National Cooperative Credit Union’s main branch.

“A lot of people look at queen shows as something that is frivolous,” she stated. “But if you know what a competitor has to go through in order to reach that level of becoming an ambassador for her country, it is quite a mental battle that you go through.”

She added, “You must not only have the presence of mind to face thousands of people watching you in a show and criticizing you along the way, but you need the presence of mind to be disciplined enough to practice, to exercise, to eat properly, to really hone yourself for that battle against other contestants. It is not an easy road and its shapes you.”

She continued, “It either breaks you or it shapes you and I think these girls are being shaped by an exceptional team headed by the CDC queen committee. They have excellent chaperons who are working with them and they have excellent costume builders and people who are really helping to make the show come alive.”

Clarke-Meade promised that this year’s pageant will be an exceptional show.

“I have been through the choosing of the queens for this year, I have been to the rehearsals, I have watched all the girls and I am telling you it’s going to be a serious competition this year because all of the girls present intelligence, poise, grace, and inner strength. That is remarkable in such a short space of time,” she pointed out.

these pageants are set up to develop young ladies and i honestly believe so. However, year after year i see young ladies embarass themselves either due to lack of self esteen or lack of training and prep. i say that after each year the shortcomings be addressed to make the following years pageant better. as for the public speaking round i would encourage the ladies to persue personal development in terms of being able to speak properly and in front of a crowd even if you are not going to be in a pageant.

it sucks to see these young ladies pariticapte and then revert to the same person once they have not made it to the top. the organizers should out something in place that ensures that some follow up work be done to help these ladies.

but i’m looking forward to a great show.
