Rain forces postponement of Showdown Mas Camp

The PSU grounds on Friday afternoon

The effects of rain, which has been lashing the island over the past couple days, are responsible for the postponement of the opening of Showdown Mas camp which was scheduled for Friday evening, according to organizers.

The event is being moved to the Public Service Union, (PSU), on Valley Road and according to Showdown Mas Camp President, Pat Aaron, the area is being transformed “into a mini stadium”  dubbed Showdown Mas Camp Calypso City. “We are actually covering the PSU grounds, it will make it look like a giant green house … people will be in there, nobody gets wet and you can see the sky, you can see the moon…” he said.

However, he said, rain has slowed the process of building the ‘mini stadium.’ “The inclement weather has really slowed down the process, so we made a decision this morning to postpone the show until Sunday afternoon for the sake of our supporters and patrons,” he noted.

Aaron vowed that the area would be covered by tonight (Friday) but thinks that it would be cutting it too close to go on with the show. “So we didn’t think it would be close enough and done comfortable enough to accommodate the show this afternoon,” he pointed out.

He is promising what he described as “improved and creative ambiance” for the staging of the show this year and said the move to the PSU ground is a ‘big risk’ and a ‘bold move.’ “It is costing us a lot of money to get this done … it is a long term investment because we are expecting to be at the venue for the next coming years,” he said.

Aaron said the show is set to begin at 6:00 pm on Sunday and it has been made attractive by adding a family package. “Fans can bring their children,” he said. “You bring two children, you pay for one and the other one goes in free.”

He also put to rest questions about the continued participation of veteran calypsonian, Sye, in Mas Camp and told patrons that the should expect the “usual high standard” of a Showdown Mas Camp which will include some exciting new  this year including Rachel Jno. Baptitse and Leona Peters of QTS fame.

Why do things to suit themselves not the public.
Why all of a sudden is a family thing I would not take my kids for sure. This is not an event for children period.

What inclement weather? That’s a bunch of crock! Thought the decision for the new venue was made a few weeks ago, which meant the organizers had sufficient time to set up. Hmm, something does not seem to be right there

Why should mass camp be a family affair? Especially since Monday morning is a school day? Any night for that matter would not make it appropriate for children.

Why would you want to bring your children to a calypso tent? And then we complain..since when tent is a famuly event…we taking it too far…

No tunell”vision” it,goes to adress the fact we need more proper facilities to host those kind of activities, I say check the chines to build us a convention hall and more to stage our national events; Rain, or shine, right now we`re not ready, and what a shame.and a great lost of money to all those associated with those events.
