The quest for Dominica’s Super Model

Rea Augustine

The quest is on for Dominica’s first Super Model.

That choice will be made at a Fashion Extravaganza on May3, 2013, to be hosted  by Dominica’s Next Super Model Inc. (DNSM).

The DNSM and its upcoming event were simultaneously launched during Fort Young’s ‘Happy Hour’ on Friday.

Founder and CEO of DNSM, Ruth Augustine,  who labels her organization as non-profit, says they’re looking for  models in Dominica who will become “Brand Ambassadors, who can fit into different modeling endorsements.”

The former Miss Dominica Pageant contestant describes the organization as the first of its kind on the island. ” Our major objective is to effectively train, sensitize and educate young people between the ages 16-30 with the necessary tools to enter, survive, work diligently and ultimately be successful in the modeling industry, both regionally and internationally.” states Augustine.

She says coupled with her organization’s mission to be the premier training facility for potential modeling talent, is the aim of “fostering a comfortable learning environment which includes practical educational activities with a faith based foundation.” She adds, “we aim to train persons to be disciplined, hardworking and successful individuals in the relevant industries where they desire to achieve their goals and realize their dreams.”

The goals of DNSM Inc. extend beyond Dominica’s borders to “promote collaboration among Caribbean states in the creative arts such as modeling, fashion and beauty” as well as partnering with the government and other cooperative bodies “to create vocational awareness, employment, youth development and economic growth which will decrease idleness and crime.”

So who will be the Face of D.N.S.M Inc. 2013? Twelve top models will compete for the title on May 3, 2013 in four  segments: Introduction, Creative Art Performance, Swimwear and Red Carpet/High Fashion.

Here’s a look at the bios of the models who will participating in  Dominica’s Next Super Model Inc’s  first Fashion Extravaganza.

Francille Lavinier

I am twenty year old Fancille Lavinier from the pristine village of Pichelin. I was born in Montin, Tetemorne on the 25th May, 1992, where I spent the first two years of my life. She would also like for them to feel comfortable about themselves, embrace their bodies and love the skin that they are in as it is her belief that “a beauty of a woman is not in the facial mode but the true beauty in a woman is reflected in her soul.”

Yinka Brumant
Earlisha Yinka Brumant

Born on august 19th 1992, I am 20-year old Earlisha Yinka Brumant from the cultural village of Paix Bouche. Creativity, determination and a hardworking attitude are major aspects of my personality which certainly helps in attaining my goals.

The preservation of our relatively untouched nature isle has always been a concern to me, thus leading me to take part in many beautification and clean-up campaigns in my community.

I believe life is just a big adventure and as with any adventure sometimes there are new challenges on the way. I like to take up the new challenges, and overcoming those gives me the zeal and impetus to continue onwards to excellence. Fundamentally, I believe that one should strive towards individual betterment, no matter how impossible it may seem.

My education started in my birth village at the Paix Bouche primary school, followed by the Portsmouth Secondary School (P.S.S) and continued at the Dominica state college. Being a sports enthusiast I immersed myself in all sorts of sporting activities upon entering high school. Cricket, high jump, netball, and long distance running were among my extracurricular activities. I had a special interest in basketball which influenced me to join the Northern Stars Basketball team. I was also the house captain of P.S.S sports team for one term.

I dont think the makeup is too much. I think it’s coordinating the colours to blend with the models look. They all are beautiful but some of the pictures shows a lack of confidence based on the pictures. You ought to present yourself in a way that makes one believe whatever you are trying to bring out be it a character, a theme etc.God job Ms. Augustine on starting an organization that will definitely benifit oalt of young ladies by helping them to be moreconfident ambassadors etc. Kudoz to you and your team.

The make-up has taken the natural beauty away from some of the ladies. Why do we think that to be beautiful is to wear make-up? We are naturally beautiful as a people, especially since we come in all different shades. Anyway, I wish all the ladies the best. They seem to be very talented and gifted young ladies.
    DOMINICA HAS TALENT !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

In almost all the introduction, they speak about their parents (even the deceased). We don’t need to know who the parents are, this information is irrelavant. The introduction should be solely based on a broader scale of information about each Overall, beautiful girls, great initiative. love the idea.

Miss Ruth Augustine…I wish to congratulate you on your new endeavour and wish you all the success that can accrue from such a great idea.Fashion is indeed an uplifting experience and if you can encourage women to look better either through dress, exercise, nutrition or something else that might help uplift women self-esteem and maybe encourage them to want better thing in life, raise their standards of self worth….maybe, you might be able to do some business with the clothing/jewelry stores to advertise their products/stores through Modelling shows and encourage sales for them.

Why do we Dominicans like to pull down our own? The girls look beautiful; if you dont have an eye for high fashion or fashion on a whole please dont say much. We need to applaud our young ladies and go to support on May 3rd. And about the franchise statement, its Dominica Next Super Model, not Dominica next Top Model..know the difference! lets all support our own and push Dominica forward, the hatians do it so why can’t we

American gymnast Gabby Douglas (a sixteen year old girl by the way) won Gold but all us black people could do was focus on her hair. Yall quick to criticize about make-up, about hair and what not but then yall turn around and idolize Beyoncé and Alicia Keys and all those other made up celebrities, spends thousand of dollars a year on beauty products and cosmetics (not to mention extensions and injections) and what not but yall cant just say ‘im proud of you ladies good luck ladies’ without saying something negative first. If those girls had just come out market and go and pose for pictures all yall would say not enough make-up and what not. Anyway, let them girls alone. Its not easy to put yourself out there to try and be the image of what all yall trying to be knowing that someone will make comments like that. Knowing that especially in our small country that people will hate and grudge and say all kind of negative things but never, never, never, put them self out there…

    • Jay
      March 4, 2013

I don’t know about any franchise but surely she would not call it a “non-profit” organisation if that were the case. However, I would recommend she re-visit the name of her enterprise DNSM as she would not want to be confused with either the Dubai National Saw Mill company (DNSM) or the Democratic National Solidarity Movement (DNSM). Good luck!
