Veteran songwriter Pat Aaron has taken a swipe at the Dominica Calypso Association.
Aaron, who also heads the Show Down Mas Camp, told a press conference recently that the DCA is “sleeping”.
“They go to sleep on Ash Wednesday and it wakes up for the eliminations in the next year. They don’t keep meetings, they don’t plan ahead,” Aaron charged.
He said calypsonians should not be satisfied with these and other issues affecting them
According to Aaron, the DCA has also failed to provide a proper backup band for the calypsonians, “especially during elimination”.
“You have a three-piece band and guys come on stage, they play their brass with their mouth and that cannot work. We should not be satisfied with that. There is no reason why the association cannot have a band so that the calypsonians can get the full essence of their songs,” he said.
Aaron said many great songs are sometimes lost at eliminations.
“For an organization that makes a lot of money, there is absolutely no reason why eliminations should be backed up by a three-piece band,” he added.

I am very proud of this website for the wonderful work that’s being done for the development of the Art’s and culture. Also its also a wonderful platform people sharing their views on many subjects .I have been in the calypso business for many years, and I have seen plenty of wrong been done in the field of Calypso. I use to wonder, why would some one want to be the president or any key position in an a association and still be a competitor in its competition ????????Don’t you think that would be a conflict of interest. well my friends, that’s what inspired me in writing the 1985 – 1986 Road march songs (Fight Dem) We competing & The Body Slam. My experience with these so called calypso writers or loves, have been a fight to the end. With all those songs they have written not one, and i say not one song have been on the international market. Why????? And that is because of the type of lyrics they have written for the great and i call them great calypso singer on the Island of My wonderful country Dominica. If yon think what i am say is untrue, you must come to Caribana in Toronto Canada to hear the songs they have give to these great calypso singers to sing. People do not have time for all this political wars at canival time. If you a critic of Governments, You must first look in the mirror and then give solutions to the problems in the country or any problems that affecting people. I have read some of this comments,where one of them is making a reference to giving trinidad carnival competition, that is madness,trinidad carnival developed on oil, dominica bananas could not do that period.pat sang a song years ago saying he working had to see dominica grow, to prosper in music culture and calipso,and we had always love him for that,so do not try to make him look like a just come, that is a old fight, fight on pat, fight on till they organize and fund carnival right.

People, people why are you guys attacking Pat? You people really need to get with it. I’ve noticed that all it takes is for someone to speak their minds in DA for them to be assualted and insulted…this is not right. Now why is Dice being attacked because of Pat’s statements…was Dice even mentioned in the statement of eliminations…that just goes to show how shallow and vindictive you people.
Most people who have legit statements and observations won’t even do so bevause of the mentality of our people…it’s a good thing Pat…and Dice are thick skinned and are used to that nonsence.
Pat just write ur songs and stop the talking ….people seeing right through you.

Why can,t calypso the calypso show be promoted for months before carnival season just like the WORLD MUSIC FESTIVAL which is held in november? Maybe if emphasis is place on preparation and promotion months before,, things will turn out much more successful.
My advice to Dice is that maybe he needs to find another writer and someone who would have a more positive impact in his life. Aparently Pat Aaron seems to be his downfall. This guy seem to be a manipulator or someone who are using the poor guys for his own gain. It is sad that someone has to go this lengh to exploit our young talented people.
Nadin could not have said it any better than this. Mr.Arron you need to stop making it all about Dice when you know very well that you just want to get control of the DCA for you own profit. Rules are rules and Dice need to get himself another writer and move on with his career. Anyway good luck for the carnival season.
While I can see reasons why some people will be quick to criticise Pat, he has made some good points. I think we in Dominica need to stop accepting mediocrity as a way of life. Planning should be an instrumental part in anything. Therefore for a show of that magnitude planning cannot just begin a few before the actual event come on people. We talk about competing with Trinidad’s carnival….. Trinidad’s carnival did not just get where it is today. It took had work and lots of planning.These people plan year round and just in begin in December when carnival is just 2 months away.
I aggree with pat the association should take a professional approach to calypso. Better must be done to enhance the art form. The association really take too long to begin planning calypso.
Pat jus want to give swinging stars some blows but he think people stupid,which other band that is there to play calypso for them.Year bfor he went over seas to get people to play for him.They does never appreciate their own but tell him to come better than dat.He jus jusing those poor guys and dump them after…remember wat he did to Oberver.
Again I will say there was Calypso before Pat Aaron and there will be Calypso after Pat Aaron.
If the Association is not keeping monthly meetings, I agree with Pat.
People say that Pat is in for the money but tell me who runs a business without expecting a profit.
I also think that since Dice started taking part in the Calypso competition, the standard has been higher because the other calypsonians have to perform better than Dice if they want the crown. And this is good for our Calypso.
i don’t know the facts so i can’t support or oppose mr aaron,,,, but i must say this,,,, due th the popularity of calypso n the extravaganze it has from other sister isles such as antigua n trinidad…. we in dominica have to get serious about music on a whole,,,, we r lacking miserably n one other thing that stinks is the videographers scenery of the event,,, it sucks,,, it must be one camera they having to shoot the entire show lol,,,, we need cameras on stage,, cameras below stage,,, cameras backstage looking towards stage to show response of crowd while the entertainer performs,,,,, cameras in the crowd looking towards the stage,,,, n arial cameras,,,, now please don’t tell me bout cost,,, we can afford these in d.a,,, jus invest in them jus as we invest in some artists to perform lol n get monster to do some real time editing,,,, camera 1 now,,, hold still camera 4 ok switch to camera 2 n so on n so forth

please mr pat,you of all person should be talking,you divide the calypsonian with each other ,you would love to see your self controlling all the calypso money,
but you will not, years ago people is to look forward to enjoy calypso now you make it about dice and dice alone,am not saying that the young man is not talented but you are messing things up for him,
if you was fair and stop saying you doe make money when the season is over then, I could believe that you honestly love calypso,but is de money you love.
