One of the island’s popular Bouyon bands, “The WCK Band” has emerged the winner in the second annual “Battle of the Bands” competition held in French, St Martin recently.
Manager and bass guitarist of WCK, Keith Goddard, told Dominica News Online on Tuesday that the band defeated four other regional bands at the competition held at the Paradise Village in Marigot, St Martin.
The show was organized by Sound Masters Entertainment in St. Martin.
“We felt great emerging winner,” Goddard told DNO. “Basically, the band entered in that contest and we just did what we had to do, put a good repertoire together that the people can enjoy and the songs that they were familiar with. Overall the band was very energetic and the crowd was very responsive to the band, so I think that gave us the edge over everybody else.”
During the competition, the band performed for 1 hour and 15 minutes entertaining a large audience with some of its hit songs which included, “Balance Batty”, “767”, “Just do” performed by Delly, and “Bouyon to the World” by Clint Henderson, to name a few.
The judging he said was done using a Decibel (DB) Meter, Goddard noted.
In addition to the title, the band got US$2,500 cash and an opportunity to perform on the streets of St Martin for J’ouvert.
“We did seven hours of J’ouvert and from J’ouvert we went back to the Hotel and then to the Airport, to return to Dominica for to perform on the streets for J’ouvert,” Goddard explained.
The other participating bands were Exodus Band HD from Anguilla, Kylo and Stylee Band from the United States Virgin Islands (USVI), Respeck Band from St Martin and last year’s champions, the Small Axe Band from St Kitts & Nevis.
Meantime, Goddard said he would like, in the near future, that Bouyon music be considered at the Grammy’s.
He stated that somewhere in the 90’s WCK and Burning Flames made it to the Bill Board list, “and I am hoping that sometime in the near future that we can see something like that again because Bouyon definitely needs more recognition.”
“It’s being recognized but I don’t think that people really attach the name Bouyon to what is being heard. They just know it’s a nice beat coming from the Caribbean and it sounds very attractive so people kind of get influenced by it,” he stated. “Bouyon music has potential and I think what we need to do as Dominicans is to embrace it.”
He said the band has received a request to perform at Dubai Festival in June and is set to perform at London Carnival in August. The band is also expected to perform at a show in Paris and another in Manchester in August.
Congratulations WCK. Keeping taking bouyon to the world
Good Job CK, hope you guys use these live recordings to promote yourself, especially the up coming events….. and to say that lyrically bouyon music not marketable internationally well you must listen to soca and tell me if soca is….. soca music is huge right but have we realised that its all playback smh……..only a few artiste like bungi garlin who do otherwise
like a boos! ck to the world
WCK the noise makers – Some call it music.
thats my band. No matter all the oppression in Dominica you still rise. Good job. CK
grammy’s hmmmm I find u very ambitious
Why bouyon cannot be in the grammy’s??? He too ambitious?? People like you so who don’t reach anywhere. Just sit and criticize and never do anything positive but when somebody else takes it up people like you are the first to shoot it down. #buylocal #support our own
Grammys. Woy bell bef!!! Espeway .
Love that Band wii Great job. CK FAN
What’s there to like? You mean all the noise they make? You like noise?
Congrats CK.
I must say I am very pleased to read this news. “Bouyon to the World.” WCK 4 life
Ck to the bone .
Wonderful! Good job guys! Congrats to you KEITH, in particular, you deserved this recognition.
Mais, I myself don’t know about Grammy’s in the “near future” nuh. A LOT of work to be done to get there. Not impossible but … bouyon music (lyrically) is not TRULY marketable internationally, as is. Rhythm wise some so-called bouyon bands is just a parchay noise, tweh in people head, if you not ‘under it’ you cannot enjoy it … but GOOD LUCK!
CK Fan, nice comment but when we talk about wck band music lyrically are we really listening to the songs that ck been putting out over the years….tracks like “I in dat; Busted; Free me up; De Band Coming; I love Bouyon; 767” just to name a few are very strong lyrically but because the DJs are not pushing these songs, instead fill the airwaves with lives from bands who’s focus are bent on creating riddim and chants we conclude that ck is doing the same…….PLEASE PEOPLE LISTEN TO WCK BAND TRACKS BEFORE JUDGING THEM!! #BOUYONTOTHEWORLD

Hello, earth to wherever you are….the story reads:

You evidently did not bother to read the full article. All the competing bands are listed in the report.
Well Done WCK…. Good job guys.. You guys are ambassadors and representing the country. …… WCK is the number one bouyon band , not one of the top bouyon band.
That’s the best piece of news in months for Dominica.
Wish the government could honour you all as one of the longest serving bands in Dominica………
Perhaps you guys should get concessions on instruments and so forth….
Well done Keithy, we done Clint, and the rest of the Road marching Band. Cheers to CK
