Botanic Gardens irrigation project in full swing

The hope is to enhance the Botanic Gardens with water features, and flowers that survived there before Hurricane David.

A $1-million irrigation project for the Botanic Gardens has gotten off the ground.

The area has become a popular spot for recreation and yearly activities like the Creole In the Park during independence time.

The irrigation project is the first step to developing the Gardens back to what it was before the passage of Hurricane David in 1979, the National Parks Division says.

“Because of the wide use we have to see how overtime we can actually develop it, being cognizant of the fact that it’s being widely used by the public,” National Parks Director Minchinton Burton stated.

The hope is to enhance the Botanic Gardens with water features, and flowers that survived there before Hurricane David.

thats great and a long overdue project, but after all this hard work goes into keeping the grass nice and green all year long, it should not be used as a dog restroom, there must be a law against people walking their dogs into the gardens to releave themselves, the same grass/lawn that children play and we have picnic on . can you inmagine seeing a child roll in dogmess……

That’s a real good move. at a later stage the project should be expanded by adding a man made
lake and a cascading water slide from the river behind the gardens. Also more trees should be
planted. A tree planting project should be spearheaded by local groups in conjuntion with the
    Forestry Division.

Plans should be made to remove the Roseau Infant School and some other buildings within the Botanical Graderns, if we’re truly serious about returning it to its glory days.

Good initiative…But why can’t they think a little bigger and add a few more bench under the trees or
build a little fountain where people can relax and look at the fishes swim or even build a little track around the park so the people who want to go walking or cycling will have a place to do so…. couldn’t that be incoperated into the whole development of the park? just a thought trying to contribute to the development of the land…….

I think that’s what they mean by “water features.”

A very good initiative by the authorities. I would really like to see the gardens back to, at least what I remembered it like in the sixties in terms of the state of the lawns and the bamboo house.

Great.. !!! This is long overdue, and a much needed project, especially with the Carem season soon approaching, and the fact that this is a tourism site. My only wish is that instead of using DOWASCO as the water supplier, we build your own reservoir and pump water from the nearby river behind the UWI (Its not rocket science) this will save the country alot of money in utility payments.
