Bus driver wins carbon emission competition

Bus driver Julien Jeffers gets an award because his vehicle registration number HB 369 has been singled out in a survey that shows it released the least amount of exhaust fumes into the environment.

The results of that Discover Dominica Authority Carbon Emission Competition was announced on Thursday.

The DDA says it sought to determine from a field of six random taxi buses operating on the Roseau bay front, which vehicle released the least amount of exhaust fumes into the environment, in keeping with local activities marking World Earth Day 2012.

The competition involved placing a white sock on the emission pipe of each of the selected vehicles for a few seconds while the engine ran for thirty seconds.

The sock which came out the least tarnished was adjudged the winner, and Jeffers says he is thrilled that he won.

He attributes his winning to the fact that he services his vehicle regularly.

“ I service my vehicle every six thousand kilometers. My mechanic also told me that if you service your bus on time you will protect the ozone layer, your vehicle will last you longer and the performance of your vehicle will also be uplifted”.

Jeffers will receive a free oil change compliments J Astaphan and Company Limited.  He is encouraging all drivers to become environmentally conscious.

“There are a lot of vehicles on the road which are like moving coal pits. They should really do something about all that smoke and so on,” he said.

On the losing side, the bus which released the most exhaust during Thursday’s exercise was registration bus number HB159.

That driver too gets some attention – he’s been told his bus can get a tune up compliments AL Motors.

The Discover Dominica Authority’s Kathleen Cuffy  is hoping that this initiative will spur drivers to be more environmentally conscious and take responsibility in ensuring that their vehicles are serviced in a timely fashion.

“The message that we want to send out on World Earth Day is that we as responsible people take care of our environment, be responsible in what we do.  Gas emission should be a major concern as it can impact on the environment negatively,” she said.

World Earth day is celebrated annually on April 22nd. This year the day will be celebrated under the theme: “Mobilize the Earth”.

???????? No of fence but couldnt they at least state the year, make and model of the vehicles in question and the fuel type. Just seems like comparing apples to oranges to me. Diesel will have more carbon soot in their exhaust than gasoline vehicles.
    Just seems a bit strange.

“A white socks” wow!!! Only in Dominica…DNO has really put our ignorance on display for the rest of the world. Our comments on DNO are a joke and sounds very uneducated. Our priorities as a country are upside down and back to front and now we doing emmission test with a white socks in 2012. Carbon monoxide is a colorless and ordoless gas and “Two-thirds of the carbon monoxide emissions were found to come from transportation sources.” (http://www.carbonmonoxidekills.com/26/carbon_monoxide_emissions)

Common guys stop looking and sounding ignorant to the rest of the world. “A white socks”

I think it is time that Dominica adopts the emissions testing/standards for vehicles before they can be considered roadworthy. There are too many vehicles that emit excessively large amounts of air pollutants. There are some vehicles in Dominica that would not even pass the test for farm use far less for road use.

The DDA should do a campaign for who can clean the Roseau Old market the best. the place is disgustingly black and dirty. Shame, as one of the first and main places that cruise ship tourists stop to shop.

Whilst I praised that our Dominica is role playing to cut down on the Green House Gases.I could not help laughing at the ignorance of the white sock emission test competition. As a Qualify Road traffic Investigator, I have summed up some basic principles that should be followed for future referencing to gaining accurate results.

    1. Place the car on a CO Analyser checking that the probe can be inserted into the tailpipe.

    2. Use a suitable exhaust gas analyser to
determine the proportions of carbon monoxide {CO) and hydrocarbons (HC in the exhaust gas over a period of at least 5 seconds at idle.

Note: Any residual hydrocarbons (ie those indicated by the analyser when it is sampling only clean airj should be deducted from the HC reading obtained from the vehicle.

Note: If a vehicle meets the CO requirement at its normal idling speed but fails the HC check, re-check the HC level at a high idle speed of 2000rpm. If the HC reading is 1200 ppm or less, the vehicle will meet both the CO and HC requirements.
. the CO requirement must be met with the engine running at its normal (low) idling speed
. do not use a cold start/cold running mechanism to achieve a high idle speed. Instead, apply light pressure to the throttle pedal.
. HC not applicable to Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) fuelled vehicles.as this burns at much higher temperature.
CO readings on most cars can be obtained from the manufactures hand book.

Every little nonsense in Dominica makes news!

Are we still importing motor vehicles into the country without smog devices on the engines to protect against the emission of smog which pollutes the environment.

Are we so far behind the times, and the rest of the world!

Poor little fool, we are in the twenty-first century, smog devices were invented way back when.

You cannot find a single motor vehicle anywhere in the developed world on a public street running which does not contain a smog devise, unless it something from the 1920’s to the late 1950’s, smog devices were introduced more than forty years ago.

If we are still importing motor vehicles into Dominica with smog devices, that is an indication that we are still very backward, and if you want you can curse, shoot darts at the kid I doh care oui!

      Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahah!

good idea discover dominica;there are however a few things that most be understood. the white sock will only identify particulate matter not other contaminants such as carbon monoxide, sulphur dioxide and nitogen oxides which are even more detrimental.although i applaud your efforts to bring greater attention to the pollution debate in DA there is a need to be more scientific in the approach

This is unscientific. They need a machine to scientifically determine how much carbon is actually released from tail pipes. I am not buying that test at all.

I’m praying God that real EPA researchers do not see this. Great leverage for comedians like Jay Leno, and David Letterman. I’m negative because we expect better from “Discover Dominica Authority”. Yet another example of how backwards, uneducated, and ancient Dominica still is in 2012.

      April 19, 2012

@ ME… the point you should take away from this initiative is not the test method that they used but the encouragement of our fellow men to be more environmentally conscious … do not bring your negativity into this positive effort. Oh, feel free to use a ‘proper emissions tester’ if you ever take the community initiative to launch such a worthwhile endeavor (I doubt you will since folks like you only know how to stand on the side and criticize).
