Dry spell could affect Morne Prosper event

The current dry spell being experienced in Dominica may hinder an entertainment event scheduled for April.

A major market fair which is being organised by the Morne Prosper Village Council to highlight and display locally grown crops from the community may be affected by this dry weather.

Speaking in an exclusive interview with Dominica News Online, Clerk of the Morne Prosper Village Council Linella John said that the low rainfall have inhibited the growth of crops in the area and leaves the council to question whether the agricultural display sector of the event – the main event – will be possible.

“The agricultural display [is] the main heading, but then with the drought we are experiencing, rainfall is very low so we are not too sure where that would be heading,” John said.

The village of Morne Prosper is dependent on farming. The Market Fair/village feast will also feature  art and craft, catering and livestock display among other entertainment segments.

Meanwhile, the Dominica Water and Sewerage Company (DOWASCO) has been advising persons to use water conservatively to cushion the effects of the dry spell.

Head of Communications and Customer Service at DOWASCO Gwennie Dickson had said that water levels at intakes in Dominica have already decreased as a result of the dry spell, and the situation could become worse.

this drought business is going to get worst in the future, therefore the famers should begin investing in water systems for their plots.

Garcon all you people soundin real ig-rant!! I suspect all you never get involved in anything in all you community at all, then you would know more about your country.

Garcon Dominica hardly needs an irrigation system in place because we have high rainfall levels. The places that need irrigation have started work on it or have it in place already. We are having a drought in de Caribbean!!! What rivers have to do with what is going on? Its not like we have that problem every year.
Do you understand what a drought is? We need the water to drink all you talking about watering Gardens! The tourist will learn that if you cut your trees you will have no therefore dry grass…
Morne Prosper has some of the most fertile soils in D/ca well supplied with rain – when it have.

Stop making D/cans sound ig-rant! Iniowan!

Dominica does not have 365 different rivers omg where did you people got those facts from…. show me scientific proof that Dominica has actually 365 different and seperate from one another individual rivers. Such as starting from the source of the river and following it down to its end…. Most of the rivers in Dominica are interconnected just with different names… Also name the so called 365 rivers Dominia claims to has……

How pathetic. A country with 365 rivers and our farmers suffering. At least 60% of our banana and non banana crops should be irrigated. All water from rivers running down to the sea nd farmers suffering. look at our botanic gardens, a national park, a tourist site, a play ground. see what the drought has done to it. There is water running through the gardens to the cruise ship birth. What a
shame my people. our farmers and citizens should not be going through that dilema when we boast of 365 rivers to the world.i guess that’s the NEXT LEVEL!
