Residents of Layou are being advised to exercise extreme caution when traversing in the Layou River area.
Based on reports from office of disaster management, there stills seems to be a high level of saturation in the soil, weeks after the breach in the Mattieu Dam.
Honourable Parliamentary representative of the St. Joseph Constituency, Kelver Darroux, made the disclosure during an exclusive interview with GIS news.
“The fear is that there may be future landslides but we are hoping that does not occur. However, in the meantime, a cabinet subcommittee has been set up to really address the matter head on and we received several reports from the Office of Disaster Preparedness, from the Ministry of Tourism, the office of Environmental Health as well as the Ministry of Agriculture and the Ministry of Public Works. Based on the reports that we have received we are looking as to what best plans can be implemented to address situation as it currently exists,” he said.
However, in the meantime a cabinet subcommittee has been established to address the issue. Honourable Darroux said that government remains committed to addressing the situation.
He said that there is also a need for the dredging of the river, which government is currently looking into.
“We have received several applications already from persons and companies who are interested in this and the Government will take its time to really look at it carefully and see how best we can move forward with the process. So the Ministry of Planning and the Ministry of Public Works are engaged in discussions with the various stake holders to see how best and how quickly we can get the sand out of the river so that we can avoid any future disaster in the area,” he pointed out.
In a news release on DBS radio, I heard the Minister of Agriculture talking about the project for animals to be located in the Layou Valley area. I am just wondering, isn’t that dangerous and a waste of resources in the event that something happens? Didn’t we see what happened to the agricultural station? Just my little piece.
Exclusive interview with GIS news? What happen to the people who do not listen to GIS. Parl Rep go on all the stations and let the people know what is going on.
just came from my vacation saw every thing i think the the whole village should be evacualated the area is really bad, dont wait when something happened to move.
“We have received several applications already from persons and companies who are interested in this…”
The government better not play the fool and let someone come and do this for free and take all the sand… like last time… profit out of this disaster… good sand that there…
While the region is lining up for our material to reclaim coastal land “We have received several applications already from persons and companies who are interested in this…” They seeing $$$$$$$
For Goodness sake should we allow the money ($4million) to be spent dredging “training” the river or stabilizing the Dam?
What effect does dredging the river have on; the water table, the fish nursery( largest nursery on west coast) and the related industries?
Who are this expert advisers?
Or is it someone looking to make fast big $?
“We have received several applications already from persons and companies who are interested in this ”
Will the reconstruction be stepped back or replaced along the river bank?
Should the naturally reclaimed land be interfered with or utilized as it was meant to be?
That is, additional river delta land, fantastic fertile agriculture land that can be mechanized and a beach to attract tourist and to increase long term productivity?
After all Portsmouth, Roseau and cane field and both our airports have all been built on similar river deltas that were formed by similar occurrences?
Please DNO not another parrot
please interview someone who KNOWS what he is talking about
REALLY?
