UPDATE: Oil fumes making students from Newtown Primary School sick?

The concerns of the Newtown Primary School are being addressed this morning by environment officials after Dominica News Online (DNO) published a story that students and staff have been feeling the ill effects of oil seepage from a garage behind the Fatima Church.

DNO understands the officials are meeting with school staff on the matter.

DNO also understands the teacher that has been trying to bring attention to this matter is now being labeled an “outlaw” after she went to various authorities without any results.

The matter was brought to the attention of DNO by a concerned citizen who said the teacher has complained that her class has been experiencing headaches and feeling quite nauseous because of the constant smell of oil in the air. When the management at the garage was confronted on this matter the response was, “That’s all Dominicans are good for, talk and write”.

The email writer said the teacher, who prefers to remain anonymous, spoke to the garage facility again directly and was told that the people working there do not smell anything and she should not make “any noise.”

The writer went on to say the environmental health division was contacted by the teacher spoke to a secretary. The teacher was reportedly told that the person responsible for the area was unavailable and the person’s cell number was similarly unavailable.

The email writer is now asking are there no  rules and regulations regarding oil and waste seepage from garages? Is there no concern over the poisoning of soil? Luckily a nearby ravine appears to be draining away some of the oil.

It is reported that a similar situation is occurring next to a nightclub at Rockaway where a ravine is collecting a glutinous mess of oil waste from persons who park their trucks there for changing oil filters.

Parents, Teachers at the school should protest outside the Dept of Health building. Protesting outside the garage is pointless, as the owner obviously doesn’t care.

I’m sure that if one of the pupils attending the school was related to a so called high profile family, then something would be done.

This is a serious matter and the Dept of Health should looking into it ASAP, and not wait for someone to end up at PMH.

I hope the oil problem is rectified as soon as possible by the MINISTRIES OF HEALTH AND EDUCATION AND THE GARAGE BOUNCE and that the pupils and staff stay healthy again. The Government needs to seek grant-funds to build a new primary school in Newtown and Thibaud village and also a new Goodwill Secondary School. Can someone update me on the new Grammar School? Are all phases complete? Is the old Grammar School Building demolished making way for a new sporting complex for the students? Anyway do not blame BP or TEXACO for any oil-spill?

In December 2009 the govt sent a huge yellow beast to move earth. Some time after the elections it was taken away. Ambrose won handsomely and the DLP was smiling. Sonia still holds fast to the feeling that “who is without sin cast the first stone” politics which once had a bitter taste in her mouth is now sweet like honey. We like it so

the authorities need to do something about this issue these children are the future i think this is utter nonsense and there should be no excuses as this is a serious matter and let me guess since the oil spill is flowing into the ravine there is also oil spill going into the sea. what about all the health complications the students/staff and even the
workers at the garage can face in the long run this situation can definitely be avoided for some people its all about the money and they dont care who they hurt

This a problem people like myself have with situations such as these, when we the concerned ones speak,we become public enemy.I don’t understand who gives these garage owners the right to set their workshops anywhere and any how?As for those responsible for the environment, they only hold a job.I see and hear the so called minister for the environment on the tv ever so often advertising he is Domoinica, what is he doing about all those environmental issues we have all over the island?Teachers, call on all the parents together with the students and march with your placards to the site of the garage and protest.

Alas Newtown School still suffering. I can remember when the landslide came down and the school still same thing. I passed the the other day – some classes have no doors!

A few children are already complaining about headaches and chest pains. A teacher also complained of dizziness. One of nausea.

Yes it is a government school and so long the Chinese have asked the government to put things in place so that they construct a new school on the same site. Up to now they have not done what they have to do. And the parl rep? Mr does not even push for the school. Newtown needs better representation and more respect.

We had a similar incident with the L Rose factory and the Dominica Grammar School. The student body started outlining protest action and class boycott and the situation was soon remedied by the Ministry of Education.

The teacher should write placards for her little class and have them parade around Ministry, see how quick she will get some action.

Shame on those in authority for not giving this instant emergency attention…

…the ravine, like so many others around the country is kept clean by rain, once it’s in the sea it’s nobody s problem anymore right..

      November 2, 2011

Perhaps they should call you Nudibrain instead. Oil gets dissolved by water and ravines are there to serve as man’s “cloaca”?
And whilst you’re looking that one up also check for “carcinogen” and you may learn something. Late P.M. Charles was right when he made that remark about our ignorance.

What is happening to our public health teams?

DSC the students reading public health should investigate the complaint in the company of the public health officer resonsible for the area – a field trip, and a tangible, functional plan for addressing the complaint developed and implemented.

It does not involve politics so no one will comment until maybe (God forbids) a child dies. The ministry of health should give this PRIORITY!!

The teachers of this school are suppose to have the full backing of the ministry of education in this regard.

  23. Satelite
    November 1, 2011

This is a very serious matter, and i do hope that something is done very quickly to have such a situation under proper control. especially for the students of that school. This situation speaks out loud, very loud, cause I am sure that leakage of oil does not only affect that particular school or area, but affects most areas where garages are used. Toxic fumes affects us all in one way or the other.
