PM gets kudos for stance on whale hunting

Skerrit

The East Caribbean Coalition of Environmental Awareness (ECCEA) has attributed the efforts of Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit as one of many contributing factors which have led to what could be the end of Japanese whaling in whale sanctuaries.

In a press release, the ECCEA stated that a recent decision by a Japanese whaling fleet to quit a major whale hunting expedition in the Antarctic may possibly be the end of a 23-year-long “scientific research project” which has claimed the lives of over 10,000 whales.

Last year Skerrit had confirmed that Dominica would not vote for commercial whaling in the 2010 International Whaling Commission (IWC) meeting in Morocco. He had taken the same position in 2009. His announcement came after concerns were raised by local conservationists.

“Dominica will continue to support the sustainable use of marine resources but in respect to supporting commercial whaling, Dominica is not going to be doing that. I’ve made it very clear that our position remains, and there’s no change from last year or the year before,” Skerrit had stated.

The ECCEA release said, “We also congratulate the Honorable Roosevelt Skerrit, Prime Minister of the Commonwealth of Dominica, for his stand first taken in June 2008 and repeated in March, 2009 that removed his government from the list of island nations voting along with Japan in maintaining its breach of international protocol by whaling in the Southern Ocean Sanctuary.”

An article posted in the Australian newspaper Sydney Morning Herald on February 16, 2011 entitled “Japan believed to be quitting whaling season early” stated that the Japanese whaling mission was cut short as the program has come under intense pressure from environmentalists and conservationists in recent times.

The ECCEA said that it would consider the end of Japanese whaling as an achievement which would call for “fantastic celebration as the decades of hard and often disappointing work by environmentalists and conservation-minded countries the world over would now have paid off”.

So it’s ok for this country to kill whales off their own waters, but they don’t think it’s ok for Japan to kill them elsewhere???

The whales feel the same pain from being murdered wherever they are murdered. Killing is killing.

Does this country really need to kill whales to survive???

Didnt someone ask on here the other day ” who is Skerrit to talk to America?” seems like he spoke to japan, the second largest economy in the world until just recently and I had an effect. Like I said, be it Skerrit, Hector or James. Once a leader is serious, command respect and has his country behind him he can speak to any nation. It is how you approach things. The pm is working. Dca to the next level. Uwp, come on, join in and let’s work together

Tell Athie to get off the whaling ship and get going with earning real money for Dominica. Ask him about the water export project he has been “working” on for years. better still ask him about the “Sisserou Bulk Water Project”. Late last year he said his company was ready to start the project soon. But Athie, how soon is soon? There is no one else who can articulate better “how soon is soon”. No one is beter at “talking’ than athie. When the project starts then he Athie et all can point fingers at Skerrit. Surprisingly, his conservation friends have not seen the need to demonstarte in a practical way what we can do to earn money form our natural resources. They want us to keep just that way without using it for our survival. But Skerro knows when to silence. Ask Matt.
