Roseau to get cleanup

A drain in Roseau
A drain in Roseau

The MP for Roseau Central Joseph Isaac and the Roseau Sports and Cultural Connection are joining forces to kill two birds with one stone: getting rid of the stench in Roseau and flushing out clogged drains.

The project dubbed the “Clean and Green City” clean-up project, is expected to begin on Sunday, May 17.

It will begin from the bank of the Roseau River and work itself into the city.

Isaac said a survey was conducted recently and it was revealed that many non-perishable items are blocking the drains in Roseau and with the approaching hurricane season, they intended to tackle that problem.

“We are doing that because when we discuss with the people, they are talking about how Roseau is not smelling good and when you go online you see a lot of comments about Roseau. So we said that we will take the leadership role on that,” he told Dominica News Online on Monday, May 11 2015.

He remarked that in order to get the project going organizers have decided to collaborate with different institutions and private sectors and as such have written to Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit, Opposition Leader Lennox Linton, Dominica Solid Waste Management Corporation, Roseau City Council, Environmental Health, Dominica Air and Sea Port Authority (DASPA), Dominica Water and Sewage Company (DOWASCO), Fire Department and some private sector institutions to inform them of their plans and request their assistance.

“The response is really good, especially with the people on the ground saying that’s what they are looking for,” he said. “We are doing it as a precursor to the hurricane season. If we can unblock the drains and power wash it then it will minimize the flooding during the hurricane season and it will be able to make people walk freely because the place will not be flooded.”

The Roseau MP said it is expected to be an ongoing activity and they will be making use of disinfectants, chlorine and the like to clean the city.

He is also inviting all to come out to assist in the cleaning up of the city.

“It’s an open invitation to the public,” he said. “It’s not political; it’s really about leadership of your community.”

The project will begin from 6:30 am on Sunday, May 17.

Public restrooms should be used in Roseau and heavy fines and jail time should be issued for people urinating in public not using restrooms and the polluters need to be punished. Fines should also be established for people not disposing of their garbage properly. Re-cycling of plastics and other recyclable items should also be encouraged more to keep such items out of the land fill. A lot of this stuff washes into the sea outside Roseau polluting the sea. A special judge should be assigned to deal with the polluters and people who urinate in the streets.

My observations in Martinique Guadeloupe Dominica st Barts and Italy, there are differences in all the countries I mention. Does poverty have something to do with keeping a country clean, or it has to come from early childhood education. Italy is a bigger country and its cleaner than Dominica, part of the early child hood education in Italy children are taught order and how to take care for their surroundings. In St Barts you have a Rich population that vacation there and it is keep clean, in martinique and Guadeloupe the French put toilet all over the place they still throw garbage and shit by the bay. Well in Dominica the problem is not the town council the problem is us, we have to go back to the drawing board and teach people if you keep your town dirty you are loosing money. We must start in school at an early age. We as a people should not accept garbage, we will also think garbage, the cleaner things are around us is the better we are organized and the better we think.

Men peeing absolutely everywhere doesn’t help. The whole town stinks of urine. Perhaps trying to instill some common decency and respect would be a good start. Ordinary Dominicans can also play their part. If you see someone peeing in the city, yell at them, embarrass them, find a cop to arrest them.

The usual nonsense from Joseph Isaac and his gang again. Roseau town council does a great job of cleaning Roseau everyday. We see the men in their brown uniform all day on their knees even weeding the gutters and also at night we see the council workers lifting the culverts etc and hosing down Roseau. But as usual for personal gain those clowns will dance around the real problem. Joseph tell the people the true. They is no problem with the cleaning up but the real problem is they Dominicans have gotten to nasty and that is the only reason Roseau is so dirty and smells. Joseph you can do all your big clean up for show, but just like when the Roseau town council does it once the mal kassa dominicans pass after it will be a mess again. And the real problem still exist. Show for once you all really care about Dominica and stop playing pape show with people. Let Dominicans know let’s KEEP Dominica clean. And not waste resources cleaning up after nasty people.

They got rid of all the public pipes. That’s the reason why Roseau is so stinky. Bring back the public pipes. How can a land with 365 rivers have a water problem?

I can understand that we all want our city to look beautiful and clean but the media should avoid publishing such disgusting
Pictures of the place. These should be kept for our people to read in the news print and not on the internet news. We want to impress on the foreigners that what they are seeing in pictures are just a few of the wonderful sights and that what they are not seeing is even much more beautiful.
Please DNO try not to place any eye sores in your news as much as you would want too, we are going through too much bad publicity with our leaders; we need to show the world how beautiful our town is. I am calling on business people get together organize the people and go on a KEEP THE CITY CLEAN CAMPAIGN. This will bring good vibes to the place and your businesses.

We The Authorities have informed the Government that politicians getting rid of the stench in Roseau is self destructive since they would all have to leave.

The UWP/Team Dominica’s Members of Parliament are working hard in their constituencies. They are an example to Members of Parliament on the government side and to the citizenry at large. Keep it up, guys. You have certainly brought fresh air to Dominica’s politics.
