Tropical Storm Erin poised to become hurricane by Friday, likely to pass north of Leeward Islands by weekend

Tropical Storm Erin is gaining strength in the Atlantic and is expected to become a hurricane by Friday, according to the latest advisory from meteorologists. As of 5 a.m., Erin’s center was located near latitude 16.3°N and longitude 48.2°W—approximately 900 miles east of the Northern Leeward Islands. The storm is moving westward at 17 mph, with a shift to a west-northwestward track anticipated tonight and continuing into the weekend.

On its current trajectory, Erin is likely to pass near or just north of the Northern Leeward Islands over the weekend. Maximum sustained winds are near 50 mph, with higher gusts, and tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 60 miles from the center. Residents across the Lesser Antilles are urged to monitor updates closely and prepare for potential impacts.

Meanwhile, a weak trough system continues to influence local weather today. Mostly cloudy skies with scattered morning showers are expected, along with a slight chance of isolated thunderstorms throughout the day. Slight Saharan dust will linger for the next 24 hours, prompting health officials to advise individuals with respiratory conditions to take necessary precautions.

Seas are forecasted to remain slight to moderate, with wave heights reaching up to 3 feet along the west coast and up to 7 feet along the east coast. Mariners are advised to exercise caution, especially as Erin approaches the region.

Authorities continue to monitor the storm’s development and urge the public to stay informed through official channels.
