Vybz Kartel says he’d rather tour Iraq than visit Guyana

Vybz Kartel

Internationally acclaimed Dancehall artiste, Vybz Kartel has responded to a ban imposed on him by the Guyana National Broadcasting Association; ensuring none of his songs would ever hit the nation’s airwaves.

The ban was announced yesterday; just over a month after Kartel opted not to show up for a scheduled performance at the government-supported Jam Zone Summer Break show in the Guyanese capital of Georgetown.

According to state-owned, National Communications Network spokesman, Martin Goolsarran, Kartel’s music was forbidden from being played on local airwaves given the obscenity & hardcore nature of his lyrics. Additionally, Goolsarran claimed that music from “Di Teacha” offered “nothing positive” to the entertainment industry.

Kartel, real name, Adidja Palmer has broken his silence regarding the indefinite suspension of his music in the South American nation; hinting that the officials are hypocrites for imposing the ban. “It’s interesting, especially since that same radio station did a concert with me based on the fact that, and I quote, “The Guyana people don’t want to see nobody but you.” Unfortunately, I didn’t attend the show and that is the reason why the ban on my music was imposed. With that being said, I care zero about them and their ban because I won’t be visiting Guyana ever,” Kartel intimated to the Jamaica STAR.

As for the implications the ban has on Kartel’s relationship with Guyana as a whole, he stated, “I refused to go there before the ban was imposed so that ban wasn’t necessary. I banned myself. Big up the Guyanese Gaza fans but I would sooner tour Iraq than go to Guyana.”

Kartel earlier implied that the reason he refused to board a Caribbean Airlines flight to the Jam Zone Summer Break event last month due to alleged death and kidnapping threats made against him by the Guyanese. Two years prior to this, Kartel cancelled another performance in Guyana for similar reasons.

we are old enough to know good from bad and its is our responsibility to raise our children in the right way. so my people take the good out of kartel and learn from it and the bad ignore it for example in his music there are those that are very negative so i dont listen to it but he has songs that can really pertains to one’s life especially to people in the ghetto. just try and listen to this song Look on the life we living thats a good song with a great message. there is a positve and negative in everyone life let jus make use of the positive side. cuz there is much thins happening in life thats much worse than kartel and his music like our politicians and their constant lies to our nation

true..he has a few good songs but the majority are real bad. u have to admit that when he sings negative he goes off the scale. 1 & 2 good songs dont make him a respectable artist if his bad ones are MAJORLY demoralizing.

He may laugh, but if you know anything about life you would know money is not all, there are words such as honour, value, principle and even someone’s social responsiblity.Kartel may be making money but isnt contributing positively to Jamaica. When you visit Portmore,Jamaica, you basically have to hide when night falls if you are a stranger, because Kartel had war with another gang and they said that any stranger they meet would be hurt or killed, and am suppose to listen to that man?

Consider that all sorts of people from all walks of life, of every socio and economical and educated backgrounds have migrated overseas. In addition, some of them can write very well but they prefer speaking and writing in broken English. They feel comfortable speaking and writing in this language. For instance in talking to certain Jamaicans, they rattle their broken English which they call patois. It may be, too, that they forget I am not Jamaican. I simply state that I do not speak Jamaican. Their broken English is difficult to understand unlike that of Dominica.

There is absolutely nothing that you can do about us being Dominicans and return be it on a visit. Our experience abroad could also serve Dominica well.
We are Dominicans. Dominica is in our blood no matter how many years we reside and no one can take it away from us.
This land is my land (ours) God gave this land to me (us).
How wonderful it is to know that we were born in a country as Dominica and can return any time and comfortably feel that we belong there. You do not know that the feeling for you have never experienced it.
Allow us this privilege and feeling of being Dominicans even though we reside abroad. We have never given up our dearly beloved country. Wherever we may reside we stand by it and defend it.
All we ask and expect is that Dominican residents who are reaping the fruits of residing there do something good for Dominica and make it a better and peaceful place. You too will be the beneficiary of this.

Banning Kartel from Guyana is the perogative of the Guyanese entertainment authorities.Vice versa,it is Kartel’s choice not to perform there.
As a black man Kartel is degrading his culture, his history, his express image given to him by God and he is disrespecting the memories and struggles of every great black men and women.Kartel is vastly popular to the young generation and has a major influence on them.He has a responsibility as an entertainer to be mindful of his actions. However, his response to bleaching his skin is that of “shock value”.That corresponds to simply money.
I am not a fan of Kartel,Movado,Aidonia e.t.c.Though they might have some songs which are positive, the all around theme of their music is “slackness”.I know it is a different time and a new generation, but music is one of the most powerful influence on earth. The majority of youths today listen to music which just have a catchy beat or chorus.Music is life and therefore,I understand that differnt music, will be for different people. But we must examine ourselves and safeguard our children from what they listen to and what they put into their minds.Because what you input in your mind, then that is what is going to be outputed.
    Positive music such as Lucky Dube,Nasio Fontaine,Alpha Blondy,Steel Pulse,Peter Tosh,Luciano,Jah Cure,Garnett Silk,Midnite Groovers,Exile One,Kassav,Bob Marley,Culture,Burning Spear,Beres Hammond,Marcia Griffiths,Judy Mowatt,Richie Spice,Mickey Spice,Ken Boothe,Marvin Gaye,Sam Cooke,Jill Scott,India Airie,Anthony Hamilton,Floetry,Alton Ellis,Gregory Isaacs,Dennis Brown,John Holt,Stevie Wonder e.t.c,are timeless,have a message and are good food for the soul.

While I agree with most of what you said, it’s people like you who are always quick to blame musicians for societies problems…

There are many Kartel fans who are law-abidin citizens who live fairly decent lives.

The youths who go astray and commit crimes, most likely its more as a result of poverty, lack of proper upbringing, and a dearth of opportunities than because of something they heard in a Kartel song

        @ Anti-hate

Some people love excitement and scandal. It does not matter where they get it and from whom. They are endangering not only their lives but their souls by attending and contributing to those types of entertainment in addition to purchasing their tapes and disks. Furthermore we must consider the youth. What are they being taught?
Do not misunderstand them. They do not hate the musicians. Their music/lyrics do not contribute anything good to society. Love the sinner but hate the sin.

      • Mr.hmm
        September 24, 2011

Now brother we cannot lay all the burden on musicians only but they do have a roll to play,if you understand the power that music holds you will understand why kartel needs to be more responsible.I agree with some of what you say about some of Kartels fans are law abiding citizens, but what about the other set who listen to him andwant to follow his every word?Isnt he respnsible for them to?Look at the U.S not every child brings a gun to school, but the few that do and shoot up schools are they any less dangerous?

A black man took himself from poverty and now owns something. Took himself from a small island to be known world wide. Do we black people praise that achievement? No, we try bring down the fellow black man.
By the way he is bringing exposure to the caribbean, not only jamaica. Because when people hear his music and look on a map for jamaica they see the whole caribbean.
Alot of people who quick to judge and condemn others to look righteous themselves harbour and commit worst evils. They lie, steal, kill, obeah, molest, cheat, infect others with deadly diseases; so live the man alone and check all you own lives and try achieve for all you selves and stop bad mind.

Think of Michael Jackson. Bleaching products are dangerous and unhealthy. It is also the work of the devil as indecent language and lyrics. Whatever pigmentation God has given us due to our ancestors, we should be satisfied with it. Worst yet if it is unhealthy for us and our well-being.

Guyana just pissed he didn’t go there. If he went and performed them his music would be on the airwaves of every radio and television station… they invite him to perform and because he didn’t accept his music this and his music that… Kartel big up yourself but why you bleach up your skin so, you trying to be the next Micheal Jackson? :?:

  39. Nkrumah Kwame
    September 23, 2011

I have already said in a comment for the BBC when the very same artist was banned from performing in Barbados recently that it is FOOLISH and LAUGHABLE to ban Caribbean people’s music in the Caribbean. My reasons were and still continue to be for these reasons:
    1. the history of banns as it relates to our region started with the drum during slavery.
    2. So-called leaders of our region consider themselves “God”, and seem to think that they know better than consumers what is best for them. The West Indies Cricket Board also banned the “rebels” during the Kerry Parker series, but they were considered heroes and the masses clamoured for their return and their support enabled the WI to rule the world of cricket for FIFTEEN YEARS without defeat. Today we have a similar situation in the issue with Cris Gayle and that too will fail when the masses will demand his reinstatement.
    3. I do agree that the lyrics of MOST of Kartels music is extremely low but banning it runs the risk of making it/him so much more popular and consequently the ban may be self-defeating.
    4. The decision as regards this topic rests only with the LISTENERS/CONSUMERS of his production: they Alone must decide if they consume/buy his mucic or not.
    5. To attempt banning his music is like attempting to incarcerate the wind or trying to un-ring the bell!!
    6. When will our leaders learn??

      @Nkrumah Kwame

As the saying, “As many heads there are it is as many opinions we will get.” Some are good and beneficial and others are not.
The music adds nothing constructive to life and teaches us nothing specifically the youth. He and his music should definitely be banned from the Caribbean.
We are to educate and encourage the youth and not detract them from what they should learn to make them better people and contribute good and helpful deeds to society.

True! It was so sad when Michael died. What a loss! I viewed the Memorial Tribute to him on TV. Many tears were shed. Michael did much good as well. He did have a heart of gold. May his soul continue to rest in peace. It makes me sad just thinking of him. May his soul continue to rest in peace.

Do you have a comment that isn’t a superficial attack on how someone looks, like, I don’t know, a comment on the ban from Guyana or on his music? Or are you only concerned with how the man looks? Do you judge people’s actions less than their looks?

Come on, now. I don’t support his “bad” set of lyrics because they are tremendously bad (violent generally, homophobic in the extreme, etc.), but I would never ban him or anyone else from performing because of how he or she looks. That is superficial and absurd.

Obscenity and hardcore nature of his lyrics should really be banned. For too long we have put up with obscene lyrics in some songs and calypsos. Today, it entails hardcore language which teaches others to be radicals, terrorists and other criminals rather than loving, disciplined, respectable and fruitful people. It is time to cease these indifferent and dangerous types of songs and words. They should be eradicated from the face of the earth. It also includes other musicians.
He is stating that he rejected Guyana and that he would rather go to Iraq. Iraq is a predominantly Muslim country. He, his obscene and hardcore songs/language will also not be welcomed. It is also as some people and especially the young who cannot speak a few words without using the four-letter word and other such words. Their vocabulary is poor and leaves much to be desired.
Such types must consider that they are not only catering to the young but also to older ones. I do know that their aim is directed towards the youth, teaching them to be also irresponsible citizens.
Who would want to listen to that and his tapes and disks to be played in their home? What educational and inspiring purposes are they worth and serve?
The English language has many decent words which could be utilized to express one’s concern, wishes and to entertain others. What comes out of our mouths as imbedded in our hearts tell a lot about who and what we are.
We are all each other’s keepers; all are somewhat responsibility for each other. Teach people and the children well.
Proverbs 22:6: “Train a child in the way he should go and when he is old, he will not depart from it.”
Taken from the Imitation of Christ Book: “If it is lawful and expedient to speak, speak what which edifies.” I will add, and “sing”. God will judge us by this and lack of it.

well….it’s Friday morning, and i’ve had the flu all week, it’s finally leaving me, so all I want to do now is inject a bit of humor in this..here goes….

I hope Dominicans know that Kartel helping Dominica exports..because that “cake soap” he uses to bleach his skin – that is our own tried and true blue soap from DCP coming right there from Belfast…so big up to Kartel and his bleaching fans…send more money Dominica way

      @ warma

You are excused. I am pleased to read that you are feeling better. The flu could make people extremely sick and miserable. As the weather changes, it is flu time whether in DA or not. Vitamin C and D are good to prevent colds. Oranges and grapefruit, the real natural stuff are necessary and to be taken prior to getting a flu that they may ward off the flu. Do not overdo it for they are acidy.
It is said when you get a cold, rest in bed, drink plenty of fluids and take an aspirin. I do not take aspirins or cold medicine. I let the flu take its course. Once it is on us it has to take its course. If it is not getting better within a certain amount of time, then see a doctor and/or take cold medicine.
What also brings on a cold is lack of rest/ sleep, stress and good nutrition. This makes the immune system to break down. Take care! God bless!

      @ george

Sorry to say you are narrow-minded. We are the world and we are the children of the world. I do think every one loves to hear about and read what is occurring in the world. Consider too that Dominicans reside overseas in practically every country. They also may not hear of and read what is occurring even in the country/state/province where they reside. We are happy that DNO has this Website.
DNO Admin: You are correct. We know that you will keep up the good work of keeping us informed of also current events around the world. There are times I read of certain overseas matters, not about DA on your Website which I did not hear of in Toronto. A special thank you! God bless!
